The Car Game

The United States is one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. The names of its cars are familiar to most people in the world: Ford, Chrysler, GM, Chevrolet and Dodge. They even own stock in many foreign car companies in Europe, Japan and Korea. It is the one industry that made America a strong economic power. Now it is your turn to bring a revolution to the auto industry. You must build a car by following the directions below.

Directions
Task
A paper car must be constructed. It must meet the size requirements described below. The wheels must turn.

Materials
The car will be constructed from index cards or manila folders.

Size
The car can be no longer than 5 inches, no wider than 3 inches, and no higher than 3 inches. This includes the wheels.

Design
You design the car. You can use any shape that you want as long as it meets the size requirements above.

Construction
The car can be cut out and glued or taped together.

Wheels
The wheels will be made of the same materials as the car. They need to be as round as possible.

Axles (The Key)
You have to attach the wheels to the car so that they roll. There are several possible ways of doing this, and you may think of others.
 A. Use thumbtacks or pins. These will not be very sturdy and will create problems.
 B. Make a box with part of an index card. The box should be only slightly larger than a straw. The box is attached beneath the car and holds the axle in place. Attach the wheels to the straw with glue or tape. Instead of a straw you could make the axle with a piece of paper by rolling it into a cylinder.

Give your car company and model a name (example: Kurume GT2000). You should build your car as inexpensively as possible. You will have to pay for the raw materials and labor. You will be given the start-up materials below for the prices stated. Any extra materials you may need, may only be purchased with the approval of the President of the car company. All expenses must be kept track of on the given spreadsheet.
You are to keep track of all costs along the way. Your final grade will be determined on:
 a. The total cost of the car .......................................... 35%
 b. Does the car roll or not .............................................. 30%
 c. How fast it rolls .............................................................. 15%
 d. Uniqueness of the car design ................................... 15%
 e. Does the car color appeal to the public ...........   5%

Raw Material
Index cards - $100 each. Start up: six cards - $600
Tape - $10 per inch. Start-up: six inches - $60

Labor
One 60 minute period of work is worth $100.
