23rd August 2002 From:
Pierce Pond Lean-to I started out later than usual this morning, as I only needed to cover 3 1/2 miles by 9:00 A.M. This is the time that the AT canoe ferry starts taking hikers across the Kennebec River. The river is 150 yards wide and is dangerous as the water level can rise very quickly as the water is released by the energy company. Steve Longely came across at 9:00 A.M. with his first passengers, 'Yin' and 'Yang'. I took a photo of this unique service. I went across with 'Geek', a second-time thru-hiker. He is somewhat famous for hiking the AT in the 80's with a cat sitting on top of his backpack. The cat's name was 'Ziggy'. After the river crossing we wandered across Highway 201 and down the main street of Caratunk. Now, Caratunk is tiny, about 15 houses on the main street, one canoe hiring business, and the post office; that's all. 'Daddy Mention', 'Bliss', and 'Restless' were at the post office. They had spent the night at a hiker hostel nearby. After making a quick phone call home, 'Geek' and I headed a mile out of town to Steve Longley's Hiker Hostel. 'Geek' was going to stay over, as there was a hiker and whitewater festival being hosted there over the next two days. I just wanted a pint of Ben and Jerry's. This time I tried Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch, which was very nice. I then had a beer with 'Geek', said my farewell, and headed back to the trail. The temperature was in the mid-60's and it was clear and sunny so I moved fast. I was intending to camp at Moxie Lake but when I got there I found that the shoreline is completely covered in thick scrub, so I hiked three miles to the next shelter. 'Scarecrow' is here plus four other Northbounders I've not met before. That's it for today, folks. I'm in the tent tonight as the Mozzies are
back. Goodnight all.
