7th August 2002 From:
Lake of the Clouds Hut About 10:30 A.M., 'Haze', 'The Lone Ranger', and two other hikers came to take photo of me in the dungeon. They were dressed in their hiking gear and were off to Mt. Washington. The weather hadn't improved, however, the hike to Mt. Washington was about one mile, and it was possible to get a shuttle down to a nearby town. It's 5040 feet where I am now - Mt. Washington is 6288 feet and is the highest point in New England. I made the decision to stay here all day as did 'Blaze'. In a way it's a waste of a day as there's nothing to do here. Losing this day will put a little pressure on me for the next few days, as I want to get to the post office in Gorham by noon Saturday. That gives me two and a half days over rough terrain to do 36 miles. 'Pooh Bear' turned up just after lunch and he is joining me in the dungeon. Three other Northbounders have since joined us in the dungeon; just room for one more. The dungeon only measures 8 feet by 8 feet, has stone walls, a steel ceiling, and a ship-like steel door, so it will be somewhat crowded tonight. Sitting here at the window of the hut with 'Blaze' and 'Pooh Bear' we can see the little steam train that's part of the cog railway that goes up the side of Mt. Washington. The cloud cleared around 3:30 P.M. and we went outside to view the peak of Mt. Washington. It seemed close enough to reach out and touch. It's strange sitting here with 30 or 40 day and week hikers; we really
didn't fit in, and were not comfortable with crowds anymore. I guess we'll
all have to readjust when we get back to the civilized world.
