11th July 2002

From:  Wiley Shelter
To: CT341
State
: Connecticut (CT)
Miles: ?  1447.6 (992.6)
Miles today:  12.8

Another milestone today - I've finished the AT in NY. Mid-morning I crossed the state line into Connecticut (CT), and, as the trail in CT is only 53 miles long, I shall be into Massachusetts in just a few days. Only five states to go, including CT: CT, MA, VT, NH, and ME. (TKH - see AT State info)

Again today the trail was very good. A few more hills but the trail surface was easy to walk. The weather was hot but dry.

My goal today was to get into the town of Kent, which is only 1/2 mile off the trail, so I got an early start so I would reach town around lunchtime. My plan was to stay in town overnight in a hotel or motel, however, as the best rate I could get was $99.00 (USD), it was out of the question.

I went to the outfitters and bought a new pair of shorts, two pairs of socks, and two pairs of sock liners, plus some Aqua-mira water treatment. I then put my film into the Photo Store for processing as I wanted to mail the photos to The Keyboard Hiker today if possible. I then went to The Inn and had a nice lunch and tried to negotiate low cost accommodation, without success.

The town of Kent is a very pristine, pretty village. The stores go down the main street and off the main street in a number of cul-de-sacs.

I spotted 'Henry D' sitting on the lawn under a shady tree which was between a small complex of shops. I dropped my pack there then dashed over to the supermarket and bought a pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream to make up for my disappointment in not getting accommodation. This time it was a Truffle Fudge. One side of the tub had vanilla with chocolate chips, the other was chocolate with chocolate chips, and in the center was a cylinder of Truffle Fudge. It was delicious!

I collected my photos and posted them home, bought food for the next five days, then hitched a lift back to the trail. Fortunately, there was a shelter just 1/2 mile South of the road so I climbed up the hill and set up my tent. There were two Northbound section hikers there: 'Joanne' and 'Dave' from NY City. They have just started on the trail today and will be out here for six weeks. 'Joanne' gave me half a punnet of blueberries that a trail angel gave her this morning.

Well, again it's been another hard day at the office, so I'll say,
Downunda
