24th July 2002 From:
VT 11/30 Unfortunately, at 6:00 A.M. there's not a lot of traffic. At 6:30, 'Cowboy' and 'The Lone Ranger' came along and were dismayed to see me still waiting. They positioned themselves further down the road and put out their thumbs. Ten minutes later 'Tiger Lily' and 'Bliss' turn up and look very worried upon seeing the three of us still trying to get a ride. They moved further down the road. At last a guy in an old pick-up with a cab on the back, stops for me; he is happy for 'Cowboy' and 'The Lone Ranger' to get in also. Then we convince him he can squeeze the two girls in so he stops for them also. We were sure thankful for the ride - 15 minutes we were at the trail and on our way. It was very cool this morning (50 degrees) and the sky was cloudless - a perfect day coming up. The storm had brought a cool change and cleared the humidity. I really felt re-energized after the stop at Manchester Center and later at 'Tortoise's' home. The trail was nice and easy and I hardly worked up a sweat all day. The girls, 'Tiger' and 'Bliss' said farewell along the way as they are leaving the trail today to go and meet their husbands at Danby. They'll be off the trail for four days for a little R&R. I stopped at one of the shelters at 5:30 P.M. and cooked dinner and then hiked on for another hour, where I found a nice spot for my tent. 'The Lone Ranger' tagged along and has his tent set up just near me. He's from NJ and is a part-time accountant (semi-retired). Hopefully the weather tomorrow will be just like it was today. That's it for now. I'm going to lie down and read a book 'Bliss' gave
me using my new Princeton TEC Aurora Headlamp. Goodnight all.
