5th July 2002 From:
NJ 94 (Vernon) The trail today was very good as it has been in all of New Jersey. This morning the trail had ripe raspberries growing alongside so I had quite a few of those and they were great. The trail climbed up onto a ridge and followed it for all of the afternoon, in fact, for about six miles I was hiking on exposed rock face, which was enjoyably different. The radiated heat later in the day was uncomfortable. The views from the ridge were great as the trail was going parallel to Lake Greenwood. This is a large, narrow lake; it seemed to be about eight miles long. There were lots of nice holiday homes lining much of the shore and there were plenty of marinas and speedboats towing skiers. It looked like the people were really getting into their summer break. It was a very warm day, perhaps in the high 70s, however, there was a cooling breeze all day, which made it the best day we have had for hiking in over two weeks. I had only a little soreness in my left ankle so I think that problem is almost cleared up. In all, I had a very good day. All through New Jersey, many of the other hikers have encountered bears on or near the trail, and the bears have not been timid like those further south. They seem to just look up at the hikers, then continue on with what they were doing, so the hikers get a good look at them. I have now completed the trail in 8 of the 14 states, which is some sort of milestone. I have about another 80 miles to do, and then New York will be done with. [TKH - see a "State by State" Guide below] Staying at the shelter tonight are: 'Woodstock', 'Semi-Pro', 'Snowmaker', 'Gear Girl', 'Sunny D', and 'Lambkins'. That all folks, goodnight all.
