12th June 2002 From:
Quarry Gap Shelter I got off to another early start as another hot day is forecast. The other hikers tell me the temperature was in the low 90's, which I've found it hard to believe, as the sun doesn't have the same bite as it does at home. Maybe the damaged ozone layer makes the difference. Around 9:30 A.M., I stopped at the Birch Run Shelter for a break and a snack. I discovered this was a chipmunk-friendly shelter, as it seems the chipmunks have adapted to hikers. While I was eating my granola bar, a little guy came from under the shelter and sat at my feet. I kept feeding him crumbs to keep him close by - he was cute. I continued on to the hostel just outside the state park. It's rather expensive at $19.00, but I need to get my laundry done. Some of the hikers have opted to stay in the campground over the road. There are seven of them sharing one tent site for $15.00. The problem over there is there are no showers or flush toilets - they may as well camped up the trail. Tomorrow will put me into or just outside of the town of Boiling Springs; however, I probably will move straight through and head to the town of Duncannon, which is only two days from here. I can then re-supply and move on. I forgot to mention, this hostel can accommodate about 45, however, tonight there are only about six of us here. Also, I need to mention that I have left Maryland and am now in Pennsylvania (PA). I will be in this state for two or three weeks, as I believe the AT runs about 250 miles through PA. That's all for now, goodnight all. |
