18th June 2002 From:
William Penn Shelter We got to this shelter around 3:30 P.M. and 30 minutes later a thunderstorm came through with heaps of rain for the next 90 minutes. We thought a whole stack of hikers would race in here to escape the storm, but so far only two others, 'Dutch Puppet' and 'Two Step', have arrived. For dinner tonight, I had instant potatoes, herbs, and butter (given to me by 'True' when she left the trail), followed by Lipton's Pasta with Broccoli and Cheese, to which I added a packet of tomato soup. It was delicious! I had Faye (my wife) send me some packets of Surprise peas and dehydrated onions. I have to pick them up from Palmerton, PA post office in three days time. The dried peas make a great addition to a Lipton's dinner. I'm amazed that dried peas aren't readily available in the USA. The trail was fairly level today following the ridge line, although we got the expected rocks and boulders, which made for slow travel for half of the day. The temperature today probably didn't get over the mid-60's, so we didn't need much water. Tomorrow morning will see us reach Port Clinton, PA. I'd love to get a Sub sandwich, a pizza, and a pint of ice cream whilst going through. However, my guidebook indicates that the town doesn't have too many facilities, which sounds strange. I guess I'll find out soon enough. I think I have enough food to get me to Palmerton, PA, which is three days away. However, I would like to buy one or two additional food items before then if possible. 'Réal' has to get food somewhere tomorrow as he is almost out. That's all for now, goodnight all.
