I forgot to mention yesterday that quite a few of the hikers in the shelter saw bears yesterday. Around 4:00 A.M. a thunderstorm came crashing through, it was a good night to be in the shelter. I guess the rain lasted for about an hour. We certainly need it, as many of the identified springs are dry.

It's 9:30 A.M. now and I'm sitting outside the Food Lion Supermarket in Front Royal. I've just put my photos in for processing at CVS and they won't be ready until 11:00 A.M., at the earliest.

When I came off the AT at Highway 522, there was a car parked there that had been trashed - all windows broken and radio and motor parts gone. The local sheriff pulled up to check it out, as it had been reported to him. It wasn't reported as stolen, so it looks like a hiker had left it there.

It only took me ten minutes to hook a lift to town. The guy who picked me up was going home to get his canoe and go paddle down The Shenandoah. It was his 40th birthday and this was his present to himself.

Thank God for Food Lion. I've just had a chocolate milk, a banana, and four doughnuts! Unfortunately, I've also bought 3 1/2 days food, which is going to weigh me down this afternoon. That should see me through to Harper's Ferry, some 54 miles away.

After I finish at the post office, which is a mile down the road, I'm going back to get a Blimpie submarine sandwich at the Amoco Service Station, then get a hitch back to the trail. This will be around 2:00 P.M. and I need to get 10 miles in today if possible.

So, I'll close off and say goodnight all, a little early.
