8th June 2002 From:
Harper's Ferry 'Real' had heard of a house in the center of town that had three tent sites and allowed free stay there for thru-hikers. We wandered around until we found the house. Dean and Steve are the owners. Dean was home and said we were welcome to move in, which suited me, as the campground was too far from town. So, I headed back to the campground, stopping for a hiker's haircut on the way. It was rather hot walking all the way so when I had packed up my tent, I had a quick shower and moved out. I decided to hitch into town due to the heat and fortunately after five minutes a local "trail angel" picked me up and dropped me at my new campsite. I've just finished setting up and 'Real' and I are going to the local pub for a quick beer. It was pleasant having a beer in The Armory Pub as we were sitting outside under cover just near the sidewalk. After that, we wandered around some more historic buildings, then along the banks of the Shenandoah, where I watched the rafters come through the rapids for a while. One of the highlights I saw today when walking back to the campground was a house with a veranda across the front and down one side. It had two huge civil war canons sitting on it. Of course, the floor of the veranda was concrete. I'm now going to head off to the pizza place; about 3/4 miles up Washington Street, and get some dinner. I'll be trying to get an early start tomorrow, as it will be hot. I forgot to mention, I have completed the AT in Virginia (all 550 miles or so of it). I am now in West Virginia for the next few days, then onto Maryland. With that, I'll close and say goodnight all. |
