28th May 2002 From:
Waynesboro ![]() 'Six Layer Burrito' was in the lobby and ask if I wanted to go with her. A local had offered to drive her anywhere in town. I had a quick look at my journal (thanks, 'Relic') and a quick look at my website (thanks, 'The Keyboard Hiker'). Then it was off to the Rockfish Gap Outfitter to get new boots! I couldn't hitch a lift (should have taken my backpack), so I ended up walking the 2-3 miles. I must have tried on eight pairs of boots before I ended up with the same brand, different style to what I had been wearing. I have a really wide foot and the Hitec has an extra wide fitting, so that settled that. My foot size has gone from a US 10 to a US 11 and I'm not surprised given the cramping I have had to endure for the last few weeks. At only $74.99, if they only last 400 miles, I'll be happy enough. I managed to get a lift back to town with a young college girl who had been shopping at The Outfitters. After that, I shopped for a few days' food and bought an FM sports radio from Radio Shack and I'm now ready to hit the trail tomorrow. Waynesboro is a really nice town; a little spread out, but nice tree lined streets and lots of fine examples of American architecture. The motel has a list of people who volunteer to shuttle hikers back to the trailhead, so I'll ring around after I close the journal entry. I've had an enjoyable and relaxing "zero day" here in Waynesboro, however, I am looking forward to the next week where the trail follows and crisscrosses the famous Skyline Drive. With that, I'll close and say goodnight all. |
