State: Virginia
Miles

Miles today: 19.2 miles
Weather: ?

I'm at the Pinefield Hut with five others. To finish off my dinner, I am about to eat a small tin of pineapple I bought at a store today.

It was sunny all day and the trail was oh-so-smooth, not many hills either. This trail through the Shenandoah's is spoiling a lot of us hikers.

Many of the hikers are seeing bears; adults on their own and adults with cubs. It's funny, as some years, hardly a bear is sighted on the AT.

Mid-afternoon, I passed through the Loft Mountain Campground and paid a visit to the camp store to get a few provisions. While there, I bought a pint of strawberry cheesecake ice cream and a 7UP. I polished those off while sitting on the grass outside. While I was at the store, a young guy came up to talk with me. He had hiked the AT some years ago. Currently, he is cycling The Skyline Drive through The Shenandoah's, accompanied by his father in an R.V. He said that today whilst he was cycling a bear came charging out of the woods just in front of him and ran straight across the road into the bushes and grabbed a fawn (baby dear). He heard the fawn cry and the crushing of the bones. It rather shook him up.

I didn't see any other northbound hikers today until I got to this shelter. Where is everybody? In the shelter tonight are: 'Three Day' and his friend, Zac, 'Gold Bond', 'Mud Hen', and 'Scratch'.

A quiet day on the trail today - let's see what tomorrow brings. That's all for now, so I'll say goodnight all.
