2nd September 2002 From:
Campsite - Rainbow Lake The trail was nice and easy. This was the first time I had hiked in the dark so it was an interesting experience. I passed the next shelter on the trail around 8:00 A.M. and it was empty. I pushed on and by 9:30 A.M. I walked across the bridge spanning the Penobscot River and into Abol Bridge. Abol Bridge is just a grocery store and a campground. 'Lotto' was there in the store and was surprised to see me. I bought a chocolate milk and some fresh donuts to eat immediately, plus some additional supplies for tomorrow. A young Northbounder who I first met at Delaware Water Gap, 'Crazy Foot', turned up and bought some food and joined 'Lotto' and me outside. I left Abol Bridge after about an hour and hit the trail again. The trail paralleled the Penobscot River for a few miles and that was rather spectacular. The river is about 100 yards across and has very clear water. 'Lotto' caught up with me and we hiked together for the rest of the day. We turned off the Penobscot and followed a number of streams until we finally hit a road that had a sign pointing to the Katahdin Stream Campground. Half a mile later, around 2:30 P.M., we arrived to cheers of joy from 'Daddy Mention', 'Mama Said', 'Bliss', and 'Restless'. These guys had a reserved campsite, so I put my tent up there. 'Restless' mother, father, and husband, Frank, arrived. They had brought fruit, cookies, and beer, so we all had a small party. The day was warm and pleasant, and ended on a very relaxed note. 'Crazy Foot' is planning to hike up Katahdin at 3:00 A.M. so he can catch the dawn up there. 'Daddy Mention', 'Mama Said' and I are aiming to leave around 6:00 A.M. Well, this has been a really great day on the trail and hopefully the ascent of Katahdin will be as good, if not better. That's it for today, folks. Goodnight all.
