Downunda is due to reach Mt Katahdin, the end of the Appalachian Trail Tuesday 3rd or Wednesday 4th September 2002. Katahdin is the most beautiful mountain on the trail. The name means "greatest mountain" and it will be the single biggest climb of his trip.

More than 4,000 feet of elevation change to reach the 5,267 foot summit. The ascent will take 3-4 hours. From there Downunda takes in the scenery with the best views possible and no doubt reflect on the past few months of his life. He will then descend the Mountain to Katahdin Stream Campground (Baxter State Park).

Getting to the big Kangaroo at LA Airport from here isn't as easy as it may sound. He will need to hitch a ride from Baxter State Park to the town of Millinocket, which is about 20 mile away. Once in Millinocket he will need to hitch another ride east to Medway where he can then catch a bus to a town with an Airport. The bus is the only form of transport heading south from this part of Maine. There is only one bus a day.

Here's some of what Downunda will experience over the next few days....

This is what Downunda will see as he approaches the end of the Trail.
This is about 3.5 mile from the base of Mt Katahdin.
