Spelling Bees

I can't understand this thing about Spelling Bees. It seems to me that all that is happening is that students are learning to spell a list of words, many they most likely have never heard of, and certainly have no idea of what they mean. So what's the point?
I think that not only should these kids learn how to spell the words, but also should be required to give the definitions. Doing this will ensure that their vocabularies will be expanded and they will actually have learned something useful.

"Gilmore Girls" is no more

On May 15, 2007 that wonderful, amazing, and perinially Emmy-snubbed treasure (with one exception) Gilmore Girls aired its final episode - "Bon Voyage."
It is hard to find the words to describe the feelings I have about its demise. On the one hand, I hate, HATE that is will not be back, EVER!
But time and again I've read interviews about how many pages of dialog Lauren Graham and the rest of the cast had to learn (80 - 90 pages versus 50 - 60 for a not-so-dialog-oriented series). The burn-out factor HAD to be horrible!
I can totally understand why Lauren and Alexis (Bledel) would want an easier schedule. But if the stream of chatter was diminished, it just wouldn't be the same show.
The one thing I could never do would be be to choose a favorite episode. Mainly, because almost every episode had at least one scene in it that was outstanding. So rather than name a favorite episode here are some of my favorite scenes, in no particular order. (If you're a GG fan, you will know the ones I am referring to. If not, you won't.)

From the episode, "Last Week Fights, This Week's Tights" (Liz and T.J.'s wedding) -- Lorelai and Luke's first dance
From "Those Are Strings, Pinocchio" -- Rory's Valedictorian speech
From "A House Is Not A Home" -- Lorelai proposes to Luke
From "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days" -- Lorelai's "Mimi" speech in Luke's diner
From "Bon Voyage" -- Lorelai watching Rory sleep.

I could go on and on and on listing my favorite scenes, but it would most likely include something from nearly every episode, so I won't.
I will certainly miss seeing new episodes next September. The Season 7 DVD set will be out in November, and I have already pre-ordered it.

As a final word, let me say that Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann, Keiko Agena and the rest of the cast have given us (me, for sure) seven wonderous, unforgettable and marvelous seasons of the most loveable characters and most delightful town ever imagined. They will be surely and sorely missed!

(And BTW the only Emmy GG won was for makeup for the fourth season episode The Festival of Living Art)

William Earl Milligan

1915 – 2004

On June 9, 2004 my father died. He was 89.

For the first 87 years of his life he was in relatively good health. But he started complaining that his legs were feeling weak. He would go for morning walks, and had to start using a cane. But he got steadily worse and we got a walker for him.

A few months before he died, I got a call from my mother at 4 in the morning that he had sat down in the bath tub to wash his feet and couldn't get up. (Both he and my mother were early risers.) I drove to their house to help get him out of the tub.

Another time I had to leave work because he had slid down in the recliner he was sitting in and couldn't get back up.

The final straw came when he fell and split his head open. He was taken to the hospital and it took sixteen staples to close the wound. Fortunately, he wasn't seriously hurt, but it was then that my mother realized that there was no way she could get him up if he continued to fall. So we had him put into a nursing facility.

It was located close enough that my mother could drive over once or twice a day to check on him and to make sure he was eating (she was 88 at the time).

He was undergoing physical therapy to try to build up the strength in his legs, but he only got steadily worse. Eventually it got to the point that he was having trouble eating. He said he had no appetite, and then could not even swallow. So we made the decision to have a feeding tube inserted into his stomach.

After this was done, we knew he wasn't going to get any better, so we called Hospice. We had him taken back to the nursing home. He never woke up from the surgery.

On June 9th, about 3:15 in the afternoon, I got a call from the nursing home that he had died. So I left work to go to my mother's to tell her and my sister, who was visiting from Massachusetts, that he had passed away. I then called a funeral home to have his body picked up. And then I went to the nursing home just to see him one more time.

The official cause of death was lung cancer. But what killed him was that a bit of the "mass" had traveled from his lung, settled into the base of his brain, and slowly took away his motor functions starting by weakening his legs, and then working its way upward, robbing him of his appetite, and then the ability to swallow. Eventually it stopped his heart.

And even though I am certain that after the surgery he was completely unaware of anything going on around him, the thing that bothers me the most is that that for those last few moments of his life, he was in the nursing home, in his room, lying in his bed – completely alone. And it should not have been that way.

Someone should have been with him when he passed away, whether he knew they were there or not.

I should have been with him.

July 2005

I am a BIG fan of Gilmore Girls I think it is one of, if not, THE BEST television show on the air today. It deserves every award given for excellence in television.

But I really want to talk about the Star of the show -- Lauren Graham. She is one of the most talented and beautiful actresses to ever come along. Her perfomance on Gilmore Girls is nothing short of genius! She can take you from delightful comedy to heartbreaking tragedy in the space of just a few minutes. Her portrayal of Lorelai Gilmore is so on target, you forget that she is but a television character. She makes you wish Lorelai was your best friend, or your lover.

But the greatest tragedy is that Lauren has never been nominated for an Emmy!!

She WAS nominated for a Golden Globe for the first season. And Gilmore Girls DID win an Emmy for Wardrobe for the fourth season episode "The Festival of Living Art." But that is small comfort considering the talent of the woman, and the overall excellence of the show.

As far as I'm concerned, Lauren deserves an Emmy in every category she could be possibly nominated for, including both Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Actress in a Drama.    And Gilmore Girls deserves an Emmy for both Best Comedy and for Best Drama.

On Sunday, August 16, 2005, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Gilmore Girls were winners on the Teen Choice Awards.   Lauren received her Surfboard Award for Favorite Parental Unit,   Alexis won for Favorite Actress in a Comedy, and as the IT Girl (?).   And Gilmore Girls won for Favorite Comedy.

Admittedly, these awards may not be up to the stature of the Golden Globes or Emmys, at least they prove that the teenagers of America (and possibly of the world) recognize talent and excellence when they see it.

But on Sunday, Sept 18th, Lauren was given the most insulting of slaps in the face -- she was a Presenter on the 2005 Emmy Awards. The very award show that completley ignored Lauren and Gilmore Girls. But to her credit, she showed no bitterness about it. AND she looked more beautiful than 99% of those in attendance.

Jan 2005

Lately, as I'm sure anyone who has watched any television knows, certain channels have been putting in movie-clip ads at the bottom of the screen during the program that is on. (They can't do this during the commercials??)
    This really pisses me off!
And if that's not bad enough, sometimes the sounds drown out the dialog of the show that I'm watching!

Man! Somebody needs to do something about that!

November 2004

My first name is David, a pretty simple name to remember. And there is not a single piece of identification that has anything but "David" written on it.
So why is it that people think they have to right to shorten it to Dave? What gives THEM the right to butcher and bastardize my name?
Are they so STUPID that they can't remember the whole name? Or are they so wrapped up in themselves that they only hear part of my name and just go with that?
I would NEVER just automatically assume that whomever I meet would appreciate me altering his or her name without them first telling me it is all right for me to do so.
And for those people who try to tell me that they are the same name --- As far as I'm concerned, David and Dave (or Davey) are as much the same as are Mother Theresa and Mother Fucker.

September 2004

Why is it that during a funeral, the preacher will talk about the deceased for about five minutes, then will give a twenty-five minute sermon?

I know I'm not the only who feels that if I wanted to listen to a sermon, I'd be in church the next Sunday. I go to funerals to pay my last respects, NOT to be preached to ! !

May 2004

Have you ever read the warnings on a tube of toothpaste? You didn't know they HAD warnings? Well neither did I, until I was brushing my teeth wearing my glasses. Here it is:
"Warnings -- Keep out of the reach of children under six years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away."

"GET MEDICAL HELP??" Are they kidding?? What do they think you're going to do -- squeeze it out into a bowl and use it for chips and dip?
If it's not safe, maybe they should take out some of the inactive ingredients -- glycerine and/or sorbitol, hydrated silica, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum oxide, water, pentasodium triphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium lauryl sulfate, flavor, sodium hydroxide, calcium peroxide, sodium saccharin, carrageenan, celluose gum, titanium dioxide.

MAYBE it's all the sodium!! Or could it be the water?
