| THE PROCRUSTEAN BED Imagine you are a traveler on a long and weary road and you come to this house where you are offered a warm, luxurious bed upon which you may rest in perfect comfort for as long as you wish the only proviso being that you must submit to certain alterations in your natural dimensions if it happens that they exceed those of the bed. That is, more or less, what happened to Andy. For years, he drifted aimlessly through his life, confused, angst-ridden. Then, he found The Brethren, who offered him security and purpose, unencumbered by the inconveniences associated with free will, responsibility, and so forth. Hes been deprogrammed now: the scabs are almost gone and his hair is growing back, but, as you can see, hes still a little cut off. |
