         CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

By the time one reaches age forty, I am
told, one gets the face one deserves. That may be.
Nonetheless, I honestly can't remember
ever committing

an offense for which this defoliated
pate, this florid nose or these rheumy eyes would
be considered suitable punishment by
any fair-minded

jury of my peers. Some appeal is called for
here. The eighth  amendment  applies,  surely. My
sentence is, while hardly unusual, most
certainly cruel.
