A couple sits silently at the opposite table,
grimacing under the weight of desire's corpse,
peering surreptitiously around the room,
interested in anything but each another.
Eventually, her wandering eye meets mine
and pierces the thin surface of crusted-over guilt,
releasing the malodorous vapor of forgotten improbity.
The waitress appears, but I am no longer hungry.
