Their ruminating faces dimly glow, like sallow moons, in the cathode rays. The motorcade turns slowly onto Elm and everyone is waving as the limo goes behind the sign, then re-emerges just at the moment the first bullet strikes. His clutches at his throat, then slumps while everyone looks on, perplexed. Mom presses pause and goes for the salt. The screen twitches convulsively until she comes back and presses play whereupon the final shot sprays his brain all over the other three passengers and the limo accelerates out of sight. "My God," Dad says with a grimace. "Pretty awful, huh?" Mom suggests. "Damn right," says Dad. This is easily the toughest steak I've ever eaten." |
