This was my apartment. Behind me is another room where I slept. The picture on the top right is the view from my living room window. I can almost reach out and touch my neighbour's home.
The picture on the bottom right is the street in front of my apartment. Space is at a premium here so front gardens are quite small and cars are  parked with just enough room to clear the road.
The charming thing about Japan is that there are no ghettos or centralized low-income housing. On my street, I lived in a four-apartment building while across the street was a million dollar home.
Keeping the community clean was a priority. Each neighbourhood has a committee to oversee cleanliness such as ensuring where the garbage is collected is kept tidy. There is also a yearly neighbourhood clean-up where all the residences participate.
