My Journey Meeting David Tom

David Tom appeared at the opening of a Sears store in Brooksville, FL on Saturday, August 26, 2000. I was actually vacationing in Naples, Florida at the time, south of Brooksville so I decided to make the journey to meet him.

Brooksville is a small town near the west coast of Florida and the store was fairly small so the event was fairly low-key. David was escorted by Sears employees and seated behind a small skirted table admist the clothing racks in the womens apparel department near the front of the store. He was scheduled to sign autographs for two hours during which time he took one short break for a few minutes. There was no question and answer session as has been at some other mall appearances.

David was casually dressed in long dark khaki cargo shorts, a grey Ralph Lauren t-shirt and his now somewhat signature Adidas. David was taller than I expected as well as a little thinner than he appears on TV. He has quite beautiful, clear blue eyes, the TV does not do them justice at all.

He seemed friendly, happy and polite. He was not boisterious or outrageous but laid back and easy going smiling easily and granting all photo requests. It seems as if David has a natural shyness, not in a snotty way, but just in a very average type guy way. The line moved fairly quickly, when you got up to the table where he was signing, there wasn't much time for talk. He was sitting behind a table which individuals were not allowed to go behind to take pictures, but he was very accomodating whenever he was asked to stand and lean over the table to lean in with a fan for apic. He has a great smile. I did speak with him briefly as I got his autograph. He did seem a bit tired so I asked how he was holding up. His reply indicated fan appearances are part of his job and while he stays busy he enjoys it. I asked him for a pic, told him to show me that fabulous smile and got a nice picture of him smiling. I then asked for one more "for luck" and he agreed giving me another great smile, the picture is almost identical to the first.

David signed for everyone in line. The appearance promptly ended after two hours and he was escorted to the back of the store by Sears employees to leave.
