He died relatively young at the age of 56 from Uremia. His wife, Joicey Reed Buckley Stout, was the granddaughter of Henry C. Mercer Co., Ky. July 8, 1845
Dear Mother,
I set down this evening to inform you that we are all well hoping this may find you and the resto of the family well.I have nothing of importance to write, only we have a fine son. He was born the 9th of June. We call him James Henry (Marrs). Tell Liz (Elizabeth Jane Stout Bailey) that he is the prettiest child she ever saw. We have been hoping for a letter from Barren County for some time but we have not received any. We want to hear from you all, very bad. I want to hear where Mary (Mary Ann Stout Foster) is and how she comes on. Tell her and Liz not to forget their promise about comming up this fall. The relations are all well so far as I know except Uncle Tommy's family. Jane's youngest child is dead. Her other one and Kitty Jane and David are going the same way except they leave that place. Dr. Polk says it is not healthy. He says Aunt kitty must send them down to Shawnee Run to stay some time. Aunt Betsy is sometimes better and then worst. Grandmother (Jane Johnson Marrs) is as well as common. Uncle Clark (Armstead Clark, husb. of Emily Stout, daughter of James Stout) is dead. He died about the middle of May. Cole was here on Sunday and he died on Monday. He was perfectly willing to die. He prayed for the hour to come that would releave him of his suffering.
Grandpap (James Stout, tollgate keeper) talks of domming down this fall and going to uncle Rushes and to Elizabethtown to see his sister, if he can get anybody to keep the gate for him. He wants to get Bob (Robert James Marrs) but he can't leave home.
Crops look very promising although we had such a dry spring there hasn't been such wheat crops for seven years. Jo Pursley started to Barren about the middle of this monthe to look for his horse. He got as far a Possom Kingdom and there he found it and he turned round and come back. He is not at uncle Tom's. Him and William was down here last Saturday and Ant Betsy sent word she was better than she had been for three years. She is taking some kind of patent medison which she thinks helps her very much. Tell Pap (Ephriam Stout) I heard he was a candidate for the Legislature if he is elected. I am in hopes he will come by as he goes to frankfort and see us.
Give our love to Liz and Henry (Elizabeth and Henry Bailey) and Pap and Ovie (Ofie) and all the children and all of the relations and all enquiring friends. No more at present, but,
I remain your Daughter affectionately
Amanda J. Marrs

SAMUEL CARTER9 STOUT (EPHRIAM H.8, JAMES7, ABEL6, JAMES5, JAMES (SR.)4, DAVID3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born April 11, 1837 in Mercer CO, Ky, and died January 10, 1921 in Barren Co. Ky. He married ALGERINE SUSAN WELLS SIMPSON December 28, 1868 in Barren Co., Ky. She was born March 04, 1842 in Barren Co. Ky., and died December 09, 1907 in Barren Co. Ky. Burial: Stout Family Cemetery, Fields Farm, Poplar Springs.
Samuel Carter Stout was a stern man, a jokester, a farmer, a pensioner from the Civil War, and a very well known and well-liked man in his community. He was a lieutenant in Co. C, 9th Ky. Infantry for the Union. He retired in 1862 after the skirmish at Camp Joe Underwood, only to become a Captain in the Militia, from which he received his honorary title, "Cap'n Samuel Carter Stout." His commission came from his service and integrity displayed in his unit in Barren Co. The following is a letter written to the governor of Ky. by R. W. Bell, Captain, Co. E., 1st Battalion.
BLACKWALNUT, BARREN CO. KY.
To the Governor of Ky. to wit:
Mr. J. E. Brambest very respectfully,
I take this opportunity to ask for some information. I, R. W. Bell, commissioned as Capt. of Co. E. in the 1st Bat. In first place not knowing my duty I failed to make a return of my co-master according to the requirements of the law.
2nd, there are some stout able bodied men in my district that have had a leg or arm or collarbone broke that are stout able men, I want to know if they are exempt from military duty.
3rd, if men who fail to attend the call for raising volunteers are liable to be fined. My superior officers said there is no cumpulsion to make them attend the calls of the Col. to raise volunteers, I contend thay are liable to be fined.
4th, my duty in regard to the conduct of the company while on the field under my command and how to proceed in case of bad conduct and disobeying orders. I, R. W. Bell being commissioned and sworn to support the U. S. Constitution and the Constitution of Ky. and the laws and all superior officers, I want to do my duty if I know it, I have concluded to aske your honar for some advise or instruction as every man in this country has a law of his own, I call upon you for instruction as military officers in some danger in this County of guarillars.
Please your honor I ask for further information on the 11 day of June the order for draft in this county being countermanded, I was ordered to notify Co. C. to attend on the 18th day of June for the purpose of raising volunteers or the Capt. was ordered to detail six men out of Co. C. for stated purpose, and I being the only Co. c. ordered to meet for that purpose. The failing of him to bee armed and equipped and uniformed and explain the order to the Col, I, R. W. Bell, Capt. together with S. C. Stout and A. A. Major refused to make the derail. A. A. Major reported to Col. The Col. then ordered the first Battalion to attend on the 24th day of June to raise volunteers, if not some men to bee under com. of Col. Wolford which the Col. exempts Co. A from raising her quota for state quare. The Col failing to attend again on the 24th Co. C raised a bounty of 100 dollars each for six volunteers and got the vol. Co. B and D, run a draft and drafted six from each Co. Co. B is ordered to report six more to draft the 1st Sat. in July.
6th, We need protection in our Co. but I think drafting and arming rebbels is poor protection. When they say they don't intend to fite, if they get in a skirmish, they will shoot there officers. Also Co. C scattered over the county would I think bee a bate for the guarillars to arm themselves and treet the men very bad if not kill them, as state quaries is looked upon as being bush whackers.
7th, if you will commission mee or some other man to raise a company to go in service stationed in the county in camp for the protection of the county, there can bee a company raised of the rite sort of men.
8th, part of the Co. not being organised and refusing to organise, I don't know how there can bee an equal quota if the Co. has to bee raised by detail, it would bee the best to detail one Co. of a portion of it so as to have them together.
9th, The commisioned officers of the 1st Battalion are very much dissatisfied with the acts of Col. A. S. Chinoweth as they think he is very overbearing by temperment and drinks too much whiskey for a man in his station. Also we think S. C. Stout or F. H. Smith more competent and better military officers. We recommend either if it would please your honor to make the exchange, as it is the general wish of the 1st Batttalion.
10th, Write me all the instruction you can and as quick as you can. I remain yours obediently,
R. W. Bell, Capt. Co. C, 1st Battalion, 15th Regt.
So, although Samuel was a lieutenant in the Union Army, he was commisioned a Captain in the Kentucky Militia, thence his honorary title.
Everyone in the community called him "unc'l Sam'l". Though he died 40 years before I was born, all my life I heard stories about "Grandpa Stout". He made a point to have his opinion known. He wrote many letters to The Barren Co. Republican, Barren County’s Union Paper, but before those, here's an article written about him:
"Our series of biographical sketches would be incomplete without his one. As soon as the eyes of our many readers fall upon the picture of this sketch, although it is made from an old portrait, the exclamation Will be "That is Sam Stout!" He is familiarly known by his friends as Sam, and everyone feels perfectly at home in his company."
"Mr Stout resides out on Fallen Timber Creek in this county. He was born in Boyle County Ky, near Danville, but came to this county when a mere boy and has been living here ever since. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Company E, 9th Ky. Regimental Infantry of the Union Army, and proved himself a gallant soldier. He comes of military stock: his grandfather Buckley was born in Londonderry Ireland, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was present when Burgoyne surrendered to General Gates at the Battle of Saratoga. His grandfather Stout volunteered from the State of Virginia, in the war of 1812 and was in the battle of New Orleans. Both the father and mother of the subject of this sketch were born in Virginia and that old Virginia style and hospitality is well exhibited in their son. A fascination for military life seems to have made it's appearance in the only son of Mr. S. C. Stout. As soon as the call was made for volunteers in the recent war against Spain, James Stout stepped forward just as his father did and is under the service of Captain ______ in Co. G., 3rd Ky. Volunteers, and in now in camp at Lexington, Ky. Young Stout has a military bearing throughout and is making a model soldier."
"Captain Samuel C. Stout as he is sometimes called is now 52 years old; is a Christian gentleman; his friends limited only by his acquaintance; the same man seven days out of every week, and attends strictly to his own business. He is one of the leading farmers and stock raisers of this county, and what he has accumulated has been done by the honest sweat of his brow, being at all times assisted in the battle of life by a kind and intelligent wife."
Obituary of Samuel Carter Stout
A man of more than ordinary prominence passed away Monday, when death claimed Captain Samuel C. Stout who died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law Rev. & Mrs. F. V. Harwood on East Main St. Captain Stout served through the Civil War and was very popular and prominent among his associate Federal soldiers. There are probably not more than 8 or 10 left in the country. He would have been 84 yrs. old next April. He retained his usual vigor until very recently when he complained some, but the end came very suddenly and unexpectedly. He was a member of the Methodist Church - very devoted and was held in the highest esteem by his own people wherever he was known. His wife died several years ago and afterward he moved from his farm on Fallen Timber and has since lived with Mrs. Harwood. He leaves 1 son and 4 daughters: Mr. J. J. Stout of Xenia, Ohio, Mrs. Harwood, Mrs. Yancy Matthews, Mrs. Wood Stringfield, and Mrs. Henry Garrett all of this county. The burial was in the family cemetery on the old home place, yesterday after funeral services by Rev. J. W. Caughron of Tompkinsville.

Lulu Ellen and her husband Freeman Valentine Harwood, had a long Christian life that was touched by as many bad things as good. In 1904, their daughter Lizzie choked to death at age 2. In 1915, their son Marvin died after a 3 week battle of Typhoid Fever.
Lulu live the life of a preacher's wife. Freeman literally took his ministry over the whole country, and for a time was very well known in the Illinois Conference (Methodist). He was also an Evangelist, so Lulu was probably home alone more than she desired, but she deeply loved and respected her husband. She always referred to him as "Brother Harwood", as did everybody else. He was a Hell-Fire-And-Brimstone preacher who had no time for you if you led an undesireable life.

JAMES JASPER10 STOUT (SAMUEL CARTER9, EPHRIAM H.8, JAMES7, ABEL6, JAMES5, JAMES (SR.)4, DAVID3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born February 08, 1876 in Barren Co. Ky., and died 1949 in Xenia, Ohio. He married ELIZABETH TALLICHET December 25, 1907. Burial: Xenia, Ohio.
James Jasper Stout was the Pride and joy of his father Sam. He was born and raised in the Poplar Spring community, professed faith in Christ at White's Chapel Church in 1895, and joined Poplar Spring Baptist Church. At his death he was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Xenia, Ohio.
He volunteered for service with the Army during the Spanish-American War, and after he came back he was a teacher in the Barren County Schools for several years. He went on to Gary W. Va. where he worked for the Crystal Block Coal and Coke Co. It was here he met and married Elizabeth Tallichet. From here, they moved to Xenia Ohio where Jim operated the Stout Coke and Coal Co. After several years, he retired to less strenuous activities. During his residence in Xenia, he served for a number of years on the school board, finally resigning in 1932, He was also an active member of the Xenia Rotary Club and Boy Scout Organizations.
After retirement, he took a job in the Xenia courthouse with the County Board of Elections. It was there where he had a cerebral hemorrhage and lapsed into unconsciousness later after arriving at the hospital. He died at his home later that day.
Jim's children were also successful in their fields. Elizabeth became a Spanish and Latin teacher, Lucy Algerine a registered nurse, and Jim Jr. a resident physician at Joseph H. Pratt Diagnostic Hospital in Boston, Mass., where he was at the time of his fathers death. He finished his medical degree in Psychiatry and left Pratt May 17, 1949. Though Social Security Death Index, I have finally found that he died in Ohio in 1981, at the age of 62. Since stroke and Aneurysm have been the lot of so many of the Stout family, I have to wonder if it took him to at so early an age.
Jim Sr. undoubtedly had that "Stout charm" like his father. A contributing eulogy that was printed about him read:
"Jim was known and loved by no doubt more friends than anyone and he enjoyed those friendships, deriving much pleasure and many happy hours from them. He will be sadly missed, not only by his family, but friends too, will miss his presence."
The following is a letter written by Jim to his father Samuel, at the birth of his son Jim Jr.:
April 15, 1919
Dear Father and All:
"Unto us a child is born. Unto us a son is given."
I feel sure that you will rejoice with us at the receipt of the above news. Young James Jasper made his appearance this morning, April 15, at 8:30 o'clock. He is a big fine boy, weight 8 1/2 or 9 lbs, has black hair and is fat and frisky. We are all tickled of course! Especially Elizabeth, the girls were not very anxious for a boy on account of boys being so mean they said - but we talked with them about it being wrong to complain at what God sends us so they finally agreed to keep a boy if one came, but it was to be understood that he was to do what they wanted him to. That was some time ago - but they are all smiles and happy as can be over the new baby.
Elizabeth is feeling as well as could be expected and will soon be alright. I went for the doctor and nurse at 2:00 o'clock, and the baby was born at 8:30.
This is just a note to tell you the news. Hope it finds all of you well. You see pa, I am a great fellow to keep my promises after all. I believe you had almost lost confidence in me, but better late than never. Love to all, write soon.
Your Son and Brother
J. J. Stout

MATTIE MORA11 STRINGFIELD (SALLY REID10 STOUT, SAMUEL CARTER9, EPHRIAM H.8, JAMES7, ABEL6, JAMES5, JAMES (SR.)4, DAVID3, RICHARD2, JOHN1) was born November 30, 1891 and died January 06, 1966 in Barren co. Ky. She married JOSHUA SHERMAN PURSLEY March 17, 1911 in Barren Co. Kentucky, son of JOHN JAMES "BUCK" PURSLEY and JANE SLAUGHTER. He was born June 16, 1889 , and died February 12, 1978 in Barren Co. Ky. Burial: Glasgow Cemetery on Leslie Ave., Barren Co. Kentucky.
Joshua Sherman Pursley was my grandfather, and to say he had a temper was an understatement. But with that temper, he could also be a very funny fellow, who loved to play pranks. My husband comments regularly that I am definitely his granddaughter, and after 20 yrs. of marriage he still sleeps with one eye open.
Josh loved to hunt, especially coon hunt. What was out of the ordinary, is that his hunting buddies included lawyers, judges, and a former Governor of Kentucky. I was 18 when he died and was amazed at how quickly word spread throughout the country. By the hour of his funeral, there were dozens of flower arrangements from coon hunting clubs that spanned from Iowa and Illinois to Alabama. One in particular comes to mind, as it looked just like a black and tan hound he had owned. However let me say here, that Josh would have expected no less.
Josh had a friend by the name of Ulysses Cherry who was also a jokester. One was constantly trying to outdo the other. One prank in particular had to do with a check. Ulyses wrote a check to Josh for something and since Ulysses had a lot of money the check was not in question. Josh took the check and kept it for a few days and then wrote "INSUFFICIENT FUNDS" across the front. He then took it to Ulysses house and presented him the check. Ulysses blew up and immediately went to the bank and demanded to see Mr. Sears to find out what happened. Mr. Sears looked at the check, and told him the bank would not write insufficient funds, they would have it stamped on the check. Ulysses immediately knew he had been had.
Not to be outdone, Ulysses got the perfect chance to get even a short time later. Ulysses and Josh went to Hodgenville for Josh to buy a plant bed burner from a man who made them. The man told Josh he would be glad to make him one, but he didn't have the money to buy the materials. Josh said he would pay the $350.oo up front, the man agreed and Josh started home. They stopped to gas up, and the service station attendant asked who they were and what they were doing there. When they told him, Josh asked the attendant if the man he had dealt with was honest. The attendant said "I believe he's alright now, he did leave town one time with a bunch of people's money, but that was a long time ago." This of course gave Ulysses an idea.
At 3 am the next morning, Ulysses had his brother-in-law (Shaw who lived on the farm next to Josh) come to Josh's house and tell him there was a call for him. Josh, half-dreaded and no shoes, raced to Shaw's house thinking there was something wrong with one of his kids. Unknown to him, Ulysses' brother Hiram Cherry was on the other end of the line. Now Hiram only lived 2 miles up the road, but what he said was so upsetting to Josh, that Josh didn't recognize his voice.
"Are you the Josh Pursley that I talked to yesterday at the service
station who came up here for the tobacco burner?"
"Yea, what about it?"
"Well, it's none of my business, but I just thought you'd like to know
that he's packing up and leaving town again with your money."
Josh ran all the way to Ulysses' house, got him out of bed and they started to Hodgenville. They got there, Josh jumped out of the truck, ran up to the man's house barefooted and knocked. The man came to the door rubbing his eyes and said, "What can I do for you?" Josh didn't say a word, walked back to the truck, got in and looked at Ulysses and said, "You know, I've got a notion to kill you!" Ulysses laughed all the way home.
One day my father Hub Lee was at his father Josh house, and Josh asked him to drive him to the mail box. It was very cold and raining hard. Ulysses raced by in his truck coming home from town, and Josh got out and waved him down and yelled "HEY!" With Josh still waving, he backed up, got out of his truck wearing a suit and dress shoes. In the cold down pour he ran up to Josh and said "What's wrong Josh?" Josh calmly said "Ulysses, if you don't get enough milk from you cows tonight, you can come over and strip mine." Ulysses stood there soaked to the bone and said, "I'm gonna shoot you, you bastard!"
Probably the best joke ever played on Josh was orchestrated by my father (and Josh's son) Hub Lee. Hub Lee happened to be in the neighborhood grocery when a man brought in a goose egg, which was not common in Fallen Timber community. Hub Lee got the egg and took it home. He took shoe polish and colored the egg brown to match the Rhode Island Red hen eggs my grandmother gathered everyday. He slipped the egg into the nest. After my grandmother gathered it, Josh's major preoccupation was to find the hen that had laid it. He unsuspectingly ate it for supper that night, and then went coon hunting. A couple of days later, Hub Lee was talking to his Uncle Hub (Josh's brother) after church at Bethel. Uncle Hub commented to his nephew that he should have seen the egg that Josh had for supper. Now Josh and Hub were very close brothers so what you told one, you might as well tell the other and he knew that. So Hub Lee says to his uncle Hub "You don't mean he ate that?" Uncle Hub said, "Yea he did, what's wrong?" "Well uncle Hub, don't tell dad but that was a buzzard egg. I painted it up to match Mom's and put it in her nest. I never thought about him eating it!" Dad stood in the front of Bethel Church and watched uncle Hub drive to Josh's house to see if he was OK.
"Josh, how are you feeling?"
"Well, I guess I'm fine, why?"
"How did that egg taste you ate?"
"Well I reckon it tasted like an egg ought to taste. Why do you ask?"
"Well Josh, it's rumored that the egg you eat was a buzzard egg!!!"
Uncle Hub then proceeded to tell his brother that it was intended only as a joke, and that my dad never thought about him really eating it. To make matters worse, on the back of my dad's farm against Fallen Timber Creek, there were buzzard caves where they laid their eggs and it happened to be the right time of year.
The next morning, Hub Lee had his car parked down at Doc Elliot's garage in on of the concrete chutes. Josh pulls up behind him where he can't get out and proceeds to find him in town. Doc's garage was located where Bale Tire is here today. As soon as Josh got out of sight, Doc had his men jack Josh's car up and move it where Hub Lee can get out. When Josh came back, he starred at it for a minute, and then looked up into the air as if to wonder if it had flown out. He checked his doors and they were still locked. Puzzled, he went inside and said to Doc, "Have you seen Hub Lee?" "No, no Josh can't say as I have." Josh turned to leave and Doc said "Josh, stay with us." Josh told him he had to go home, it was just about dinner time. Doc then said, "What are you gonna have for dinner Josh, eggs?" Josh gave him a long stare, obviously decided his statement must be coincidental and left.
Hub Lee in the meantime, has gone out to his sister Pauline Pursley Well's store, where Garrett's Grocery now stands in Green Valley in Barren Co. He parked his car behind so Josh wouldn't see it. They were all laughing about the situation when someone said, "Uh-oh, here he comes." Hub Lee got down under the counter and hid, and Josh walked in, looked at his daughter and asked if she'd seen Hub Lee. "Nope." Josh turned to leave and Hardin Mcfarland said "Josh, what's your hurry?" "I gotta get home, Mattie will have dinner ready." "Hey Josh, donna have eggs?" Josh was catching on that everybody knew he had eaten a buzzard egg. He gave Hardin a dirty grin and turned and left.
About that time, who should drive in while everyone in the store is laughing, but Ulysses Cherry, the King of Kuts. The whole store was hysterical so when he finally found out what was going on, and of course, he wanted in on the joke, and told Hub Lee to let him take it from there. Ulysses drove to Josh's house and blew the horn. Josh came out and sat down in his truck to find Ulysses laughing so hard that tears were running down his face Ulysses had told everyone at the store that he currently owed Josh one, and he was about to collect.
"Josh, I know it ain't funny, but I can't help from laughing. Me and Hub
painted up that egg and thought we'd have some fun. We never
thought you'd eat it."
"Oh ??? Well just what do you THINK we do with eggs around here
ANYWAY?"
At that point, Josh got out of the truck and slammed the door so hard, that Ulysses said he almost turned the truck over. Josh went into the house and said "Mattie, it definitely was a buzzard egg that I eat cause old Cherry's in on it too." Mattie laughed to the point of tears, when he turned to her as he grew angrier and said, "I wouldn't be so quick to laugh if I were you, you cooked yours in with it didn't you?" she stopped laughing and said, "That little bastard, I'm gonna kill him." she went down to Pauline's and told her to get hold of Hub and tell him she wanted to see him. Pauline then told her what was going on and grandma immediately decided not to tell him, he deserved it, and she was just going to let him "sweat it out."
That afternoon, Josh was working out in the garden and Ulysses Cherry's tenant Carl Creek, saw him just standing out in the field sticking his finger down his throat trying to throw up. He went to ask Josh what was wrong and was told. Carl said "Josh, it's been nearly a week since you eat that egg, it ain't gonna hurt you." Josh replied "Yea? Well I been standin' here for 2 hours trying to think of one good thing that a buzzard ever eat, and ever time I do I get sick."
Later he told Mattie to fix his supper, he was going hunting. In the spirit of a good family joke, she fixed ham and eggs. When he walked in the kitchen, he turned white and screamed "EGGS? YOU KNOW I DON'T WANT NO OLD EGGS!" He stormed out and went hunting until his usual time, 3am. Meantime Mattie calls her daughter and tells her to get hold of Hub Lee, that his father hadn't eat in a week. The next morning at 8am, Hub Lee was standing over Josh's bed at 8am (if you knew Josh, it was better to try to break something like this before he got awake enough to kill you). He told his father it was a joke, that there wasn't a buzzard egg, only a goose egg. Josh studied for a moment and said "Hub Lee, I just didn't think that you would really do that to me."
Later that day, Josh drove out to his brother Hub's house and told him the good news. Hub said "Josh, if it were me, I'd have to see that goose." Realizing there wasn't a goose in the country, he headed straight for Hub Lee's house. He said "Now Hub Lee, you know I believe you, but who had that goose?" Dad explained to him that old man Peers had a goose that was 12 years old who had layed 2 eggs. Carlos Wells had bought them, and give them to Hub Lee for the prank. Josh told Hub Lee that the one thing he had learned in the last week was, "You can die and not a thing in the world be wrong with you."
He said he was already sick enough to die, and didn't think he would have lasted another 10 days. He did however, stop by Pauline's store to verify the story, on his way home.
Josh was never the kind of grandfather that you run into his house and jump into his lap. He was more the king that you run into the house and go to a back room to hide. He was more the kind that if he were in the den, you tried to stay in the kitchen, or at least in grandma's-ma's lap. He had no time for small children, he seemed to have got his fill with his own kids. But when you got older and could talk to him on his own level, he could be very funny and enjoyable (that is if you didn't disagree with him.) He has his own opinions and way of doing things, such as when I was in college, he called every Friday so see "if the girl came home." I was young and didn't think it was any of his business. But now that I'm 40, well, I still don't think it was his business, and guess I am more alike him than I care to admit. He had married after Mattie's death, and wasted a fortune on a woman who only married him for his money. But still, he once told me, if he had it to do all over again, he wouldn't have change a thing. Guess so: the last time I saw them together I was 10 years old and she was dressed in white go-go boots and a miniskirt at age 60+. They were heading to the circus that had stopped in town for a week at Gorin Park, so she could ride the elephants. Go figure.
About 3 weeks before he had his last stroke and became unable to respond, I spent the day with him. We had a terrific time. This in itself was unusual, because other than 1 night when I went coon hunting with him and two of my uncles, I really can't really remember ever having any kind of fun around him at all. Most generally that was the last place. I was just starting the family research at age 18 and he told me about the family as far back as he knew. Then he went to his bureau and pulled out a picture (so old, it was sewn down to cardboard, like they did in the 1800's and was broken in half). That picture contained my g-g-grandfather Captain Samuel Carter Stout and all his relatives, including brothers and sisters born in the early 1800s. He told me that if I stuck with it, this picture would mean allot to me in later years. Well granddad, for once I’ll admit your are right.
Children of MATTIE STRINGFIELD and JOSHUA PURSLEY are:
i. JAMES HOWARD
12 PURSLEY, b. April 21, 1914, Barren Co. Ky.; d. April 22, 1914, Barren Co. Ky. (James Howard was a breach birth, and Mattie always said that the Dr. killed him while trying to pull him out,)
ii. ELMER GARLAND "BUD" PURSLEY, b. August 10, 1915, Barren Co. Ky.; d. July 04, 1986, Ellijay, Georgia; m. (1) LOU CRABTREE; m. (2) VIRGINIA WELLS.
Bud Pursley (as he was known to friends and family) was a Methodist Preacher and famous evangelist who held large camp meetings and was widely known. He was a very religious man, and for the most part, reminds me of the previous minister mentioned Freeman Valentine Harwood. If you visited him when he had the church in Fountain Run Ky., you were required to walk on the opposite side of the street from the local pool hall, and weren’t even allowed to look that way.
He was steadfast in his beliefs. I have a newspaper article where he went to court for a sermon he preached. During a revival he commented that a lady did not drink, smoke or use foul language. One of the members had a daughter who smoked, and of course what father want’s to be told, in a manner of speaking, that his daughter isn’t a lady? So he took Bud to court for slander.
Like the rest of his brothers, he was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He was said to be a talented heavyweight. When he entered the ministry, he gave it up because he believed he could not do both, but he too learned some lessons on the way.
Bud and his wife Lou were sent to Eastern Ky, a rather difficult mission. In the summer, he was scheduled to preach a revival up the mountain, where there was no road, only a dirt path. He put on his best suit and shoes and climbed the 7-mile hike. When he got there, the Church was small and full of poor people.
He preached the first night's sermon with no response, which was uncommon. At the end, the place cleared like a skunk had walked in (his own words). Outside, there was one man and his wife left. Bud asked them if they knew where he was supposed to stay and they offered to put him up for the night. Bud followed them to a one-room cabin where they fixed him a bed hardly big enough for him. They then left, he assumed going to their house. He didn't sleep well thinking about what was wrong with the service and walked out on the porch at 4am. At daylight, the man and woman emerged from the smokehouse, where they had slept on a pallet. Bud apologized feverently and felt terrible.
While the woman cooked them a meager breakfast, He and the man began to talk and he found out that the last preacher that wore a suit, ran off with a woman in the congregation. He was advised to wear overalls, work boots, and bring his wife to the next service. As a matter of fact, them man asked him if he had a wife, and if so why wasn’t she there with him? So he did both and everything went fine in the revival. He noticed the people he was staying with had little to eat, so he borrowed a gun and went squirrel hunting. Straying off the path, as he had been warned not to do, he came upon one of the members, running a moonshine still. He asked the man if there wasn't any other way he could make a living. The man immediately told him "
to come down off his high horse", and "It'll do you good to remember that any money you get at the end of this revival will come from this still, the one around the corner or the next one." They talked for a while and Bud realized that since he had been there, he had seen NO type of crop what-so-ever. Well, that’s because there were no crops or gardens due to the rocky mountainside.
So on Saturday morning, Bud looked on as the village loaded up all the whiskey made that week on one old gray mule, and sent the kids went down the mountainside to sell the goods and get food for the community. Once Bud accepted their way of life, he said it was about the best revival he had ever had. He also learned that there were worse things than a pool hall across the street from your church. Herman and Mae were robbed and MURDERED by
DAVID LEROY SCAGGS, for $30. Scaggs now sits on DEATH ROW in the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville, awaiting execution. He has spent 18 years filing appeals, all of which have been turned down. In 1999, the Supreme Court refused to hear his case. Since Governor Patton is a proponent of the death penalty, we do not expect him to grant a stay of execution. Scaggs is 1 of 3 men scheduled to be executed this year. In my opinion, he should be the poster child for the death penalty.
