Buffy the Vampire Slayer Trade Paperbacks by Dark Horse

Note: according to my younger sister Amber, who is a great Buffy the Vampire Slayer television show fan, some of the drawings of the characters are very different than actual appearance of the actors and actresses. There are also some plot differences. According to her, the graphic novels and the television show are very different, but she likes them both.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Dust Waltz

Author: Dan Brereton
Penciller: Hector Gomez
Inker: Sandu Florea
Colorist: Guy Major
Letterer: Ken Bruzenak
$9.95
Dark Horse
ISBN: 1569713421

Review: Mr. Giles, the school librarian at Sunnydale High, introduces his niece Jane to Buffy and her friends. Later in the cemetary, Buffy is "on watch" for vampires, and hanging out with her friend Angel. Suddenly they are attacked by some strange beings. While fighting the strange beings, a tree falls on Buffy, rendering her unconscious. When she awakes, she notices that Angel has disappeared. Can Buffy, Jane, Cordelia, Xander, and Willow rescue Angel from Lilith, the mother of all vampires? The dialogue is hip and funny, and the illustrations are excellent, especially the facial expressions. This, and other Buffy graphic novels are based on the popular television show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Recommended for ages 12 and up, due to violence.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Origin

Authors: Christopher Golden and Daniel Brereton
Penciller: Joe Bennett
Inkers: Rick Ketcham, Randy Emberlin and J. Jadsen
Colorists: Jeromy Cox and Guy Major
Letterer: Ken Bruzenak
$9.95

ISBN: 1569714290

Review: Buffy is a carefree, popular high school cheerleader. One day, a man named Merrick tells her that a destiny awaits her, that she is a vampire slayer, and says that she must train to improve her skills. She reluctantly agrees. During a training session, he says "There are girls all over the world, who are different, who have the potential to become slayers. But only one is chosen." Buffy retorts "I get it. It's like winning the lottery... only, it sucks." This in an example of the snappy dialogue that is found throughout this graphic novel. The illustrations, especially the action scenes, are pretty good. This graphic novel is loosely adapted from the original screenplay of the movie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Recommended for ages 12 and up, due to violence.

Review: This book collects four separate stories: "Wu-Tang Fang," "Halloween," "Cold Turkey," and "MacGuffins." In the first story, a strange being attacks only martial artists. In the second story, Buffy and friends accompany young trick-or-treaters while searching for their missing friend, Willow. In the third story, Buffy fights bad guys in the grocery store parking lot, after shopping for Thanksgiving dinner ingredients. In the fourth story, Buffy receives a package with unusual contents. Each story in this collection is light and funny, and can be read separately. Joe Bennett, the penciller for three of the stories, is excellent at drawing action scenes. Recommended for ages 12 and up, due to violence.

One-Pound Gospel

Author/Illustrator: Rumiko Takahashi
$16.95
Viz
ISBN: 1569311315

Review: Kosaku Hatanaka is a young pro boxer who is also a compulsive overeater. Sister Angela is a young novice nun who also acts as Kosaku's spiritual mentor. Sister Angela encourages Kosaku to eat moderately so that he can stay in his weight category, but sometimes food is just too tempting for Kosaku. The stories are funny. Kosaku and Sister Angela are drawn with large eyes, which is common in many manga stories. Most of the other characters have smaller eyes. Recommended for ages 12 and up, due to characters punching and slapping each other outside the boxing ring, one instance of drunkenness, and mild swearing.
