Entry for February 1 + 2, 2007

OK, we missed a couple of days. We are now in the city of Guangzhou. Thursday was Danielle's first and hopefully last meltdown. It was bound to happen. She knew we were leaving the next day and that may have been what started it. We went to a museum in the morning, had lunch and then went bowling with the other family that we were sticking with. She seemed to have fun. At about 3pm we went back to the room and were going to relax. I guess this was not a good idea to her. She then sat saying nothing for 2 hours with her head hung low. John tried to get her out of it by holding her. She began to kick, so I thought I should take off her shoes. That was a "Bad idea," as Nicole told me. I quickly put it back on, but too late she screamed a few times and then cried. The whole time John held her. He did great. I was consoling Nicole, since the screaming scared her. She did calm down after a little while and we were able to go to dinner. We think it is hard for her to hear the word no. The orphanage did not discipline her. It seems that Chinese people in general don't discipline their children. That's what our guide explained. We are working on this, she is kind of like a wild horse. We will tame her.
Friday we flew to Guangzhou. It was only an hour flight, but it took us 6 hours to get here, between the driving, waiting, flying and driving again. We were very happy to get to the White Swan Hotel.
