Bonnie's Recital
The Amazing Vocal Recital of Bonnie Johnston
The audience waited hushed and expectantly, for the versatile opera
singer Bonnie Johnston to emerge. You could feel the excitement rippling
through the audience. Then one person spotted her as she came onto
stage and began to clap. Soon the entire assembly erupted into a roaring
applause. Bonnie made her way over to the piano and prepared to sing,
prepared to share that translucent voice. A hush once again settled over
the crowd, the silence was even more intense now that she was on stage.
She looked up and the piano began. Gazing into the audience, and then
appealing to us through her music, her clear, transparent voice cut
through the members of the audience like a knife. They were not prepared
for the intensity with which she sang. The crowd was deeply stirred as
they listened to the selection. "What?", they asked themselves, "is
life worth living for without the joy of such an incredible sound?"
As the piece came to a close, several paramedics, who had been on call
for the evening rushed in to carry out victims who thought they had
died and gone to heaven. The piano played its last chords and there was a
moment of silence. The audience then let a breath that they did not
know they had been holding, and suddenly burst into wild applause. The
rest of the evening proceeded in a similar fashion. There were always
those throughout that reached their limit of enduring such pure sounds that
the paramedics would carry out and revive.
The Paramedics have been trained to handle these situations and
have been exposed to Bonnieˇ¦s incredible voice slowly over time that
they may assist those who have never had such an uplifting experience.
One person I interviewed said that she had not been the same since she
heard Bonnie sing thirty years ago. Since Bonnie was quite young then
(or rather, not yet born) you can see the effect high-level music has on
most uneducated people.
Those that did the best throughout the concert were those that went
to school with Bonnie and have been hearing her sing from the early
days.
Our society has gone downhill if people cannot listen to pure
expressive singing without going into shock. What is this world coming to??? (
Sorry, I know I shouldnˇ¦t have ended with a preposition, but you get
the idea.)
