Meeting 2 June 2002 |
Members were reminded to bring their own stands and anything they will need for the performance. The fesitval will provide chairs for the stage. Pam will remind Larry to arrange for the chairs to be delivered.
Jill submitted a large ad and article about the consortium's envolvement in the fesitval and about upcoming June events. The DCDD will provide marching musicians who will circle the tent and drawn the attention of passers by. The GMCW will also distribute postcards outside the tent. Charles from DCDD will make a consortium flier for the festival. The "regular" members list will be lengthened to include other performer and members including: Bachelor's Party-Babershop Quartet, DC Lambda Squares, Actors' Theater of Washington, Theater Alliance of Capitol Hill, and individual artists.
The Outskirts has provided sound equipment for the arts stage and we offer them a special thanks for this generous donation. A drag performer, "Aubry" is looking for a group of singers to perform as backup on the main stage and submitted this request to the consortium.
Other Business:
Jill reported that rehearsals for Iolanthe
have begun. The production is still accepting volunteers for the
chorus and small singing parts. Jill reported that the production
did not get the CHAMPS grant, but that their will likely be proceeds from
the musical. These proceeds will be divided between CHAW and
participating consortium groups and the consortium itself. The accompanist
will be paid $500 for the extensive service this production
requires.
The new director of the GALA choruses, Barbara McCullough-Jones, had asked to be introduced, but Jane reported that she had arrived in late the night before and was not going to be able to attend the meeting. Pam will send her a notice about the next meeting.
Jill reported that she has recently received a notice about the plans for the GLBT Community Center being planned by Whitman Walker. Jill expressed concern that the responsibility of representing the consortium at these meetings and other fundraising obligations would be extensive. Jill stated that she would not be able to take on this task. Concern was expressed that the community center would not have space suitable for the larger performing groups of the consortium. Representatives from smaller ensembles mentioned that the space might be useful to them if certain equiment and accomodations were made available.
Since Carlos Arias from 1 in 10 is already representing that group at the meetings, it was suggested that he represent the consortium as well. David suggested that the consortium develop a needs list so that Carlos will be informed of the unique needs of each performing group. Charles and Pam will compile this list.
Jill mentioned that CHAW's new H Street
Theater might have more accomodations for performing groups than the community
center. Members reported that CHAW has been very generous providing
rehearsal space in the past. Jill reported that Capitol Hill is being
developed as an area of particular support for the GLBT arts community.
Jill reported on CHAW's proposal to the city to acquire the Old Naval Hospital.
This process will take at least several years and will require a great
deal of funding from CHAW and the Capitol Hill
community.
For the next meeting, Jill requested that the JAG groups (Outreach, Visibility, and Fundraising) give reports of progress on developing their goals. Those groups who have not met were urged to do so.
Pam requested that groups submit their
performance dates for the next concert season. Though some of the
groups have not decided on these dates, Pam wants to avoid early performance
conflicts among consortium members. Members are asked to send these
dates to Carol who will compile them for eventual publication on the consortium
website. The date for the next meeting was set for Thursday, July 11 at
7 PM. The consortium will meet at 1 in 10's office on 14th Street
between S and R streets. Larry will open the doors for the meeting.
