Meeting Notes

14 June 2003

DC Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Arts Consortium
Business Meeting Minutes for Saturday, June 14, 2003
Attendees: David Bielenberg, Pamela Jafari, and Carol Wheeler

Pamela Jafari, June’s Facilitator, called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m.

Capitol Pride
Carol began by summarizing this year's experience. All present agreed that it was all around much better this year that last year. The stage was great this year and the location was perfect! It was suggested that we consider decorating the stage next year, and work closer with T.A.G. In addition, we should consider more crowd activity between acts, like drawing chalk for street art, and more poetry. We needed a tent over sound equipment, which was in the sound contract. We loved the fact that CAPITOL PRIDE paid for the SOUND EQUIPMENT this year. That was super! We still need to request a check off box on the vendor sign-up forms, so that they can sign-up directly for the Arts Corner Stage. (This year vendors asked us how we got to be in the arts corner.) We also, need more arts vendors with their products to sell. Pamela stated that the arts corner was more than signing up to join gay singing groups. Although most of our performing members are choruses, we want the Arts Corner to represent all artists. We need more signage or visual art, or a banner at street intersection of 6th & Penn (balloons, or something to attract attention to the Arts Corner). We didn't like the fact that weren't any pictures of the Arts Corner Stage in the Blade (but they did announce us at the end of the article written the Friday prior to the festival). We all agreed that it was great that the Post had coverage of the DC Different Drummers Marching Band. We agreed to thank Larry for his hard work on our behalf. Pamela will send him an email.

The Mikado
Carol reported on the progress of the production. She stated that the rehearsal process has begun. Things are going well, and all the principals have been cast. This Monday, 6/16, the choreography rehearsal will begin. Next week all rehearsals will be with the full cast, after separate chorus and principal rehearsals. The show opens July 31, 2003, and all final business will be discussed at the next consortium meeting in July.

The DC Arts Advocates Social Hour
Pamela announced that the DC Arts Advocates is sponsoring a social for all DC artists interested in mingling and finding out more about the group. It will be held this coming Friday, June 20, 2003, at the Touchstone Gallery 406 7th Street, NW, 2nd floor, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be live music and refreshments served. It is a free event. Pamela will send the info to Carol, Webmaster, to post on the website.

Other Business
Carol mentioned that the Blade did not give any coverage to the Bread & Roses Concert, celebrating 25 years of singing and service to the LGBT communities. Those present agreed that any organization, whether its our community or not, but especially in our community, has reached a milestone at age 25. Pamela recommended writing a letter to the editor, expressing disappointment in the constant oversight of important community “herstory”, particularly with Bread & Roses.

David announced that the Foundation Center is sponsoring a "Funding for the Arts: An Update on Private and Public Trends" workshop on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. The center is located at 1627 K Street, NW WDC 3rd Floor. This is ARTS MONTH at the Foundation. Check out their website at http://fdncenter.org/washington/index.html

David, also, confirmed that the Kings Dominion Day for September is the 13th; the same day we originally scheduled Arts on the Hill. We will have to re-discuss our plans at the July meeting.

Finally, the Brother Help Thyself grant deadline is Wednesday, July 9, 2003.

The next DC GLBT Arts Consortium meeting is scheduled for a weekday and at dinner- time. Those present agreed to try the idea of meeting Tuesday, July 15, 2003. We would also, like suggestions on a restaurant in which we hold a meeting and eat! Please send your ideas to our email address at dcglbtarts@yahoogroups.com

- That's All Folks!
Meeting adjourned 12:40 p.m.
See you in July!
