The Caissons Go Rolling Along Phillip's Photos, page 3 The 275th Armored Field Artillery Special Battalion Equipment of Headquarters Battery In addition to the overall control of the battalion's operations, Headquarters Battery also had special equipment and personnel to operate it to support the mission of the battalion. Fearless pilots, who manned these unarmed liaison airplanes flew over the enemy positions to spot targets for the battalions howitzers. Often, the planes returned with leaves from field crops stuck in the landing gear, evidence of the low level flying required to avoid being shot down. Two L5 Observation Aircraft as shown above Observation tanks, M4 Sermans were also part of Headquarters Battery's equipment. The tanks were faster and provided more protection overhead than the open top M7. These tanks were also called upon to provide addtional protection for battery positions in the event of attack. During the German attack during the break through in mid-December one of these tanks and its crew were lost.
