Was a 2nd Lieutenant in Yell's Regiment of Cavalry in the Mexican War. After the battle of Buena Vista he was promoted and attached to one of the additional Regiments of U.S. Infantry. In the machinations that led to his company becoming part he was accused of selling his company to achieve field office for himself and it was said of him that he "has never succeeded in anything but deceiving those who were foolish enough to rely upon him....God help if you have such men for field officers."
