Company E, "OLD DOMINION GUARD"


Old Dominion Guard was organized by Major Chatham Roberdeau Wheat in April and May, 1861 recuiting among expatriate Virginians residing in louisiana. The Guard was joined by the Tiger Rifles in late April with an expectation toward creation of a battalion. The Battalion was organized at Camp Walker on may 4th when Wheat was elected Major and Obed P. Miller elected as Captain of the Company in the Battalion elections on May 10th. The Guards, with the battalion, moved to Camp Moore on May 14th to complete organization and was mustered into service as Company E of the 1st Special Battalion, Louisiana Volunteer Infantry, on June 6 with 91 men on its rolls. The 1st Special departed for Virginia on June 13th and arrived at Manassas Junction on June 22. The company fought in the First Battle of Manassas where Private Austin Eastman threw the Battalion flag over the wounded Wheat and the company assisted in carrying the stricken major off of the field. The Company D on November 1 with the departure if the Catahoula Guerrillas.

On 9th March 1862, the battalion evacuated their winter camp and pulled back to the Rappahannock River where they guarded the railroad bridge with Ewell's Division until Division until they were moved to new camps at Gordonsville on April 18 and at Conrad's Store on April 30. The Guard, with the Battalion, joined Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley where they fought on the Battles of Front Royal on May 23rd, Middletown on May 24th, Winchester on May 25, Cross Keys on June 8th, and Port Republic on June 9th. The company, as part of Jackson's army, departed for the Peninsula to join the Army of Northern Virginia on June 17 and there fought in the Battle of Gaines' Mill on June 27, and the Battle of Malvin Hill on July 1st. They were probally present at but not involved in the battle of Cedar Mountain on August 9th.

The Old Dominion Guards was reoganized as Miller's Mounted Rifles (Miller's Mounted Wildcats) on September 1st at Lynchburg, Virginia. They were assigned to Robonson's Louisiana Horse Artillery in June 1863, which was attached to the 1st Louisiana Calvary throughout that summer and participated in raids into Kentucky from July 25th to August 8th. Robinson's Horse Artillery served with Colonel John Scott's cavalry brigade in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19th to 20th, in operations around Cattanooga, and participated in a delaying action against Union cavalry on the Tennessee River just before the Battle Missionary Ridge in November 1863. It was around this time that Captain Miller was murdered by a drunken soldier from another regiment. The Wildcats were dispersed into other units with Bragg's consolidation of his artillery in December 1863.

Captain Obed P. Miller enlisted on June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore and appointed Captain on 23 May 1861. He was wounded at the First Battle of Manassas (breaks small leg bone). In September 1862, Miller organized the Mounted Wildcats (a cavalry company) which was later merged with Scott's Louisiana Cavalry after Miller was killed in 1863 during a brawl by drunken soldiers from another unit."

Fredrick Johnson was the personal servant to Captain Obed Miller.

1st Lieutenant William D.Foley enlisted on June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore and was appointed to 1stLieutenant on 23rd May 1861. His name appears as the acting company commander in August 1861. Foley was killed in action at the Battle of Gaines Mills.

1st Lieutenant W. D. Tobin

2nd Lieutenant Allen C. Dickinson enlisted June 9, 1861 in New Orleans as battalion adjutant. He was wounded in the thigh at Manassas and appears on a roll of prisoneers paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1865.

2nd Lieutenant Alvan E. Read, Jr.was appointed 2nd Lieutenant 27 May 1861 and enrooled 9th june 1861 at Camp Moore. He appears on the November and December 1861 rolls as sick and on furlough.

Sergeant Daniel Ross enlisted as corporal on roll 19th June 1861 at Camp Moore. He was wounded at First Battle of Manassas and appears on the November and December 1861 rolls as Present, unfit for duty... He was promoted to 4th sergeant 6th December 1861, but was discharged from service on 4th February 1862 for paralysis.

Corporal John Gordon enlisted June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore and appears on rolls to at least December 1861.

Pvt. James Barrett enlisted on June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore. He appears on the November and December 1861 rolls listed as Absent, Sick.

Pvt. Benjamin Burton enlisted on June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore. He was on detached service near Manassas in November and December 1862.

Pvt. J.H. Campbell was appears only on the roll for August 1862.

Pvt. James Carrol was entered on the roll June 9, 1861 at Camp Moore. He is possibly the same James Carroll of Company K, 6th Louisiana, who deserted in August 1862. The latter Carroll is descibed as a New York-born, unmarried, New Orleans laborer who was age 20 at enlistment.

Pvt. William Casey enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861

Pvt. M. Conner was captured at Strasburg in June 1862, was received at Aikens Landing on 26 June 1862, and exchanged on 5 August 1862.

Pvt. Patrick Connerty enlisted 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861.

Pvt. Dennis Dowdy (also listed as Dennis Doody)enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present on rolls to at least December 1861.

Pvt. Thomas Ford was discharged from service on a surgeon's certificate on 25 October 1861.

Pvt. C. Gribble enlisted on 26 June 1861 in New Orleans and on rolls to October 1861. He was a deserter.

Pvt. George B. Hamilton enlisted at age 34 on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore. He was appears on the November and December 1861 rolls as on detached service in hospital near Manassas. He was later discharged. Hamilton then enlisted as a private a private in Company B, 8th Louisiana Infantry, at Richmond, Virgina, on 21 July 1863 and joined the regiment on July 26. He was captured at Rappahannock, Virginia, on 7 November 1863, forward from Washington D. C. to point Lookout, Maryland, on November 11, and paroled on 10 March 1863 until Hamilton was received at City Point, Virginia, on March 15 and returned to his unit. His name appears on rolls to August 1864. He is described as an Irish-born, unmarried, clerk from New Orleans.

Pvt. J.H. Hutchinson enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861.

Pvt. John Kuntz enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and on the rolls to at least December 1861.

Pvt. John McCloskey was on enrolled on 9 june 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861.

Pvt. James McDermmot appears only on th June 1861 roll.

Pvt. Peter McKune enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861.

Pvt. Henry McQuade appears only on the rolls for 8-30 June 1861.

Pvt. John Murphy appears on a 26 June 1862 roll of prisoners captured at Woodstock. He was exchanged at Aikens Landing on 5 August 1862 after signing the Oath of Allegiance at fort Delaware, Delaware.

Pvt. Linus Musgrave appears only on roll for8-30 June 1861.

Pvt. Daniel O'Neil wasa discharged on a surgeon's cerificate 25 October 1861.

Pvt. Henry S. Orr enlisted 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861. He was reduced to ranks 8 November 1861.

Pvt. John Randel enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and appears on the rolls to at least December 1861.

Pvt. Cornielius Reilly enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and appears on rolls to at least December 1861.

Pvt. John Richards enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to Decembere 1861.

Pvt. Thomas Riggs enlisted on 9 June 1861 and present to at least December 1861. Riggs accidentally shot (and possibly killed) Private James Purcell of Company B on 4 October 1861.

Pvt. Thomas Rocks enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore. He appears on a 5 June 1862 roll of prisoneres captured at Woodstock and was exchanged at Aikens Landing, Virginia, 5 August 1862.

Pvt. Henry Rose enlisted on 9 June 1861 at Camp Moore and present to at least December 1861.
