Assistant Surgeon William S. Love was appointed assistant surgeon by Secretary of War on 1 October 1861 and was appointed surgeon on 1 July 1862 while in Clark County, Virginia. He was ordered to Companies F and S of the 15th Louisiana Infantry in September 1862 and is recorded as Absent, Sick on rolls for November and December 1862. Love was ordered to Companies F and S of the 9th Louisiana Infantry on 20 April 1863. He was absent from the 9th on detached duty in Winchester, Virginia, on 2 July 1864. His name appears on a roll of prisoners captured on 3 April 1865 at Richmond, Virginia, and paroled 1 May 1865. He is described as a Louisiana-born, unmarried physician.
