Yamaha XS 750, 1977

Yamaha XS 750

I bought this bike in 1993 with 25000 km, sold it spring 1997 with 48000, after the motor and gearing were completely overhauled. (I shouldn't have! Tried to buy it back, but couldn't locate the buyer.) I love the seventies looks of the bike, its characterful three-cylinder motor, its convenient drive shaft and comfortable, slightly sporty sitting position. I bought it when I thought my XT500 was too little for touring and remembered how I liked the XS750 Special. I did tours to Norway, Korsika, northern Italy, the Alps, Vogesen with it. It had only one big disadvantage, that's why I sold it: it is too big and too heavy for me! (I can barely reach the ground on it and the machine weights 257 kg!) It had a name, too, which was given to it by my Moto Guzzi (!) riding brothers who didn't like it at all: "Eisenhaufen" (translates to pile of metal).

I bought it for an across-the-states trip in California in 1986. Even though it was chosen only because it was the smallest bike around, cheap enough and in fair condition, it turned out to be a good touring bike, but too heavy and too tall for a little person like me. I took it for the trip, stored it in Philadelphia for one year, took another trip back to Las Vegas, Nevada, rode it around the west for a year and still sold it for more than what I had paid for. Never failed me, always ran great, didn't need any repairs: reliable. And, beeing a three-cylinder, had a nice character!
