I started playing with big sailing vessels in the Spring 1999 when I sailed for the first time on the MIR. Although having always been interested in squarerigged ships, it lasted very long until I finally started sailing on them. However, during my first trip I realized that this was exactly what I had been looking for. So more voyages on the MIR followed.

One of the masters of the MIR first gave me the idea of starting a professional carreer on ships. It was in summer 2000 when I was a trainee and helmsman in his watch. He asked me why I did not go to sea as a profession if I so obviously liked sailing. I answered him, I couldn't, but started thinking about it...

In Spring 2004  I decided to give it a try. I sailed as a deckie on MARY ANNE II for 6 months. During that time I learnt a lot about ships, sailing and myself. With a chief mate who encouraged me constantly and a master who coached me I finally decided to do the big thing and go to school to become a professional mariner. Havings sailed on various tall ships since I now also sail cargo ships, such as container ships or coasters.

Currently I am student at the Maritime Branch of the Wismar University of Applied Sciences in Warnemuende/Germany. Summer 2008 I will graduate with the  "Diplom-Ingenieur" degree in Maritime Science and the STCW A II-1 Certificate of Competency (OOW) for ships of all sizes and sea areas.
