It all began in Spring 1999 when I sailed on the "MIR" as a trainee. Although having been fascinated by tall ships as long as can think, it lasted very long until I finally started sailing on them. However, during my first trip I realized that this was exactly what I had been looking for. So more voyages on the "MIR" followed.
One of the masters of the "MIR" first gave me the idea of starting a professional carreer on ships. This was in summer 2000 when I was helmsman in his watch. He asked me why I did not go to sea as a profession if I so obviously liked sailing. I started thinking about it...

In Spring 2004 with my kids having grown up and my marriage having fallen apart I decided to give it a try. I sailed as a deckie on "MARY ANNE II" for a season. During that time I learnt a lot about ships, sailing and myself. After returning home I decided to do the big thing and go to school to become a professional mariner. September 2005 I entered
the Maritime Branch of the Wismar University of Applied Sciences at Warnemuende/Germany where I graduated three years later with the "Diplom-Ingenieur" degree in Maritime Science and the Certificate of Competency for ships of all sizes and sea areas. My diploma thesis I wrote about the education and certification of nautical officers and masters on board traditional sailing vessels in Germany.

Currently I collect sea time in cargo ships towards an unrestricted chief mate certificate. During my leave times I still do some voluntary work on traditional ships, mainly on the brig "ROALD AMUNDSEN".
