Not only trainees have language problems - officers, too. So in a story I have been told by Sergey Tunikov (Chief Mate from Kruzenshtern):

A young and unexperienced (Russian) officer, fresh from the academy, is on the watch of a huge cargo ship. Suddenly the seaman who is on the lookout knocks at the door of the bridge: Ship on the starboard side he announces in Russian. (Russ. "starboard" = pravuj bord, which actually means: "right board"). The young officer does not really know how to react and what this announcement means for the ship. Not wanting to appear incompetent he decides to ask the brandnew computer that is standing inside the bridge house.
He turns away from the seaman, closes the door and types into the computer: "Ship on right side. What you say?" The computer starts to work, shakes, rattles and makes an analysis of the situation via GPS. Finally he answers: "Yes!" Stunned the young officer looks at the screen. Now he types again: "What you mean with: yes?" Immediately the computer corrects: "Yes, Sir!"
