Flensburg
Some good reasons to spend your holidays in Flensburg
There are places that are marvellous for shopping. There are places where you can have your peace and quiet and at others there is always action. There are useful places without much charm and there are enchanting places which are not suitable for daily life at all. And – fortunately – there is Flensburg, because Flensburg has a share of all these positive aspects.
85,000 residents, 1,900 hectares of fields, forests and meadows, a firth with access to the Baltic Sea, a historic city centre, a harbour city with a cosmo-politan appearance and history and a lot of space for new citizens – that is Flensburg!
In administrative German, Flensburg is called “Oberzentrum” (high level centre), a term which describes an enormous variety of services and offers, that won’t be found at most other locations of this federal state. Flensburg is a city that not only disposes of beautiful facades, but also has many depths: theatres and cinemas, pubs, cabarets and restaurants, universities, colleges and museums, churches and mosques, serious and mass sports, shopping centres and small niches – everything that you need for you life.
The 34 kilometres long firth is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful water sports territories of the Baltic Sea and Flensburg has an excellent maritime infrastructure. You can learn to sail at one of the many sailing clubs or at the Hanseatische Yachtschule Glücksburg (Hanseatic Yacht School). There are mooring sites available at the yacht harbours owned by the clubs, at the harbour for guests or at one of the Marinas, which are foreseen for the western and eastern side of the harbour. For those who enjoy speed, there is a perfect surfing area for all winds around the Holnis peninsula.
And people who like diving will find others with the same interest at one of our diving clubs. Of course, you can also appreciate the water from the shore. At both shores, white sandy beaches tempt you. Clean sea water makes you want to bathe. There is a variety that on a beautiful day even radiates a certain Mediterranean spirit. Every one, who has ever experienced one of these sides of Flensburg on a sunny day, who has watched the boats drifting past or enjoyed a drink in one of the many street cafes, will come to know the special Flensburg feeling: ‘I think I’m on holiday!’
