It's all about belief
“Scully, you may think most of my theories are
crazy, but could you once, just once shut up?" He is angry, very angry that
is, ever since that case in Sunnydale, that wasn't even a case , he can't stand
it if I don't believe him. He couldn't before, either, but it got worse. This is
our second case after we came back and Mulder really sticks in the midst of that
whole un-dead stuff. We're sitting in my living room, that means I am sitting,
Mulder's pacing, and are arguing. "No Mulder, I won't shut up. You have to deal with the
fact that I need proof, always have. Nothing's gonna change that." "But
you don't believe anything. I thought you'd eventually open your eyes but I've
lost any hope. Scully you saw it." " I saw nothing." "Yes
you did, we followed this suspect, he knocked you out, he drew a weapon but
before he could shoot me you got concious again and shot him. He said, you know
what he said, and don't tell me you don't and then he just vanished, just poof
and gone." "I wasn't fully concious then and I do not know what he said and I definitely haven't seen him vanish
into thin air." " But he did." "You believe that he did."
"What does that mean now?"
"Nothing. I'm just saying that you can't know
for sure and that it's pretty unlikely that the earth swallowed him."
"You didn't want to believe about the vampires, either at first. But you
saw it, they turned into dust." "Oh, the guy was a vampire now?! I
haven't seen you staking him or setting him on fire." "Well, maybe he
was something else, entirely." "Now I'm curious and what are you
thinking he was? Alien again?" "I've rather been thinking in the lines
of demons." "Demons now? Mulder are you going totally crazy?"
"No, Scully, I'm not. I just wished you'd be a little more open minded
sometimes." "Mulder vampires ok, I'm trying to comprehend that. But
demons are a totally different thing." "We saw demons, Scully. What
about the thing when everybody thought I was going totally mad, as you told them
it was those Frensh thing. Folie a deux or something like that. Or the flukeman,
Tooms." "Mulder they were mutants not demons and I've never seen that
monster." "Well ok they were mutants, but anyway, you read the books."
"What books?" "The ones at the magic shop." "Oh Mulder,
come on. That's too crazy even for you." "I saw what I saw."
"And why do I have to believe that you saw it? Why do I have to believe in demons? You saw it, I didn't, so I don't have
to believe anything." "You did see it, you just don't want to admit
it. Not to me and not to yourself. You chose to ignore because it's easier. You
don't want to believe." "This isn't about believing or wanting to
believe, Mulder. It's about the fact that I didn't see what you think you did."
"Oh no Dana, this is about
belief. It's all about belief. We've been working together for what?! 7 years
now and after everything you've seen, we've seen, we've been through and
especially you've been through, you still don't want to believe. You don't
accept my theories, either. You only contemplate them if every other theory
already failed. If you can't find an
explanation. Then you start to think about what I've been telling you from the
beginning on." "Mulder, I'm a scientist, always will be. I start with
the things I know and I can explain. If that fails, then I'm able to think about
other, about paranormal explanations. That's the whole point, I'm not like you,
I need to understand things, I can't just run after a hunch or a feeling of mine."
"That's not everything, Scully. Maybe you don't believe in the same things
I do, but we're partners, and a couple now, which you seem to forget more and
more often, and I don't want you to believe in everything I say,
that wouldn't work, either. But I want you to -or I'd wish you would- believe in
me. We've always been different, Scully, but that's what has made it
work, we've completed each other. I've always tried to respect your opinion, but
you have to do the same thing with mine. I've told you once, that you'd saved me,
that you'd kept me honest and grounded. I still mean that and
I love you, Scully, I hope you know that, but if this shall work we have to
listen to each other, really listen. I don't want to, no I can't lose you,
Scully, not because we can't deal with our differencies anymore and not for any
other reason." Through tears I whispered, "I don't want to lose you
either." Mulder eventually stoppes pacing and sits down next to me. He
embraces me and kisses me on the forehead. "I just want you to believe in
me, Scully. Just believe in me.", he whispers. "I do, Mulder, I really
do." I move even nearer to him and he pulls me onto his lap. "I can't
promise that I'll always believe your theories, but I can promise that I'll
always believe in you." "That's all I want." "Mulder?"
"Yeah?", he whispers into my hair. "Buffy, you know the girl from
Sunnydale, the slayer." "Yes?" "She gave me her number, told
me to call her if we ever needed help with something. Maybe we should call her.
That doesn't mean I believe in your demon theory but if there is something like
demons she should know."
"We'll call her tomorrow." "Fox, what
did the guy say before he, before he...vanished?" "I still don't
understand what it means or if it means anything at all but he said 'From
beneath you it devours.'"
