Kathy
I started my Jane a year ago. My very dearest
friend was "laid up" for six weeks with foot surgery." During her
convalescance, she found the Dear Jane website. I had seen the Dear Jane book before, but
always figured that was not in the realm of projects that were doable in my lifetime! Judy
told me that I just had to get this book and start this quilt with her. It told her I'd
borrow it from the library and try a block. Not having a clue how to start this project, I
made templates for a few of the blocks using X-ray film and put the blocks together. I did
love how the blocks turned out, so I went ahead and bought the book, but it took so much
time and the blocks were so fussy, I didn't see how I'd ever cut templates for all those
tiny pieces!
Then last February, Brenda taught at the Bloomington Quilt Show. I convinced Judy that if
she wanted me to make this quilt that she had to take these classes with me. So, we both
signed up. However, when it came time to take the classes, family committments prohibited
Judy from coming, so I went alone. After taking the classes with Brenda and learning that
there were other ways to make blocks than cutting templates, I was off and running. (I
knew all about paper piecing and rotary cutting, just never thought to do it without
patterns in a book! duh!!!)
In my year long journey, I've made 55 blocks and 3 triangles. My quilt is pink and brown
because I love the way old quilts look, and this quilt is for ME! (The last 5 quilts I've
made have been given away!)The August retreat was my first cyber-retreat and I had a
blast! People in the real world think I am totally crazy when I tell them about the
retreat, so I have stopped telling anyone!
Since taking the classes with Brenda, I've started to meet some of the Janiacs and put
names with faces on the list. I don't often write on the list, but I do try and read it.
I'd love to go to Shipshewanna sometime I'm hoping that maybe it will work out that I can
go in November, as I am out of work right now. I don't have a room lined up or anything,
but I'd really like to go. Jane's are the most amazing people in the world.
