It is oft' asked, where is Vermont?
In Canada? New York? What state is it in?
Or if not that, then wonder,
What kind of state is Vermont?
Preconceived notions flood their minds.
They lose our people in bygone times.
They place us on farms
- with horses, not cars
- with fires, not furnaces
- with privies, not toilets
- with oil, not electric.
They give us speech impediments, or Nor'east accents.
They picture us ignorant, unschool, and unpolished.
This is not Vermont. This is a jumble
Of high-class ignorance, and refusal to change.
The misconceptions are not the state.
Vermont is our home
- with glorious green mountains
- with majestic lake vistas
- with historic college towns
- with poetry and music
- with our own technology.
We are Vermonters.
We are people misunderstood.
