So far from home -
So many worlds -
So long 'til I return -
I live a life
Of space and stars -
Of worlds so much like Earth.
The ground is steel -
The sky is too -
The air is never pure -
For five long years
I'll live like this -
To serve all sapient kinds.
My life is filled
With power and might
Which I may never have -
My world is small -
It is a ship -
With Earth light years away.
Computers for my only friends -
Circuits with which to play -
A world of wires is my world -
A world to baffle sense -
In this world of power lines-
I must simply stay.
To go to worlds across the sky -
No passport do I need -
My tricorder alone I take -
And to aliens pay heed -
For I am too an alien -
When Earth's light years away.

Dedicated to Gene Roddenberry, who made it all possible
