As Zeus on high Olympus stood,
Gazing on fair Diana's wood,
Aurora cast her dawning glow
Over the fall of ancient Troy.
Dropt from glory by Athenian sword,
Dropt by change of Athena's word,
The walls of Troy in the dread of night
Crumbles as soldiers in their houses slept.
All for the beauty of Helen, sublime,
A war whose echoes crossed even time
Set man to man and death to all
With the sacred omen turned to evil.
Deceit that night was brought to bear
And all the gods were in witness there
As the trumpets sounded to salute the dawn
That rose over the ashes that once were Troy.
For David B. and Karen C. - In English or Latin, the story rings true, and strikes a chord in the soul of man. Thank you both for teaching me the glory of a forgotten age.
