The winds of autumn blow strong and chill.
The life of the earth falls to deep sleep.
The leaves of the tree exult in the winds,
Changing their aspect from green to gold.
The winds grow stronger as winter comes.
The winds howl louder with growing fury.
The leaves grow frightened,
As each falls lifeless.
The leaves of the trees cover the earth,
And mother Gaea receives her children;
Yet one small leaf, a lifeforce unique,
Still clings to a twig in the frigid gale.
A winter's blanket buries the leaves
Lying cradled in their mother's arms,
This one leaf, growing nigh to death,
Still holds to life, against all odds.
Then, as spring once more brings life,
This lonely symbol of a long-gone year
Sees at last that she must die
For her infant sisters to come to life.
Loosing her grip from the slender twig,
The last leaf of a season past
Is caught by a gentle breath of wind,
And rejoices that her sisters now may live.
