Little child in your nursery,
Why are grownups all so foolish?
Little child in your infance,
Tell me what you know of life.
Little child, not yet violent,
Why do great men yet wage war?
Why do grownups hurt each other,
While little children only love?
Little child, yet uncorrupted,
Why do people lie and steal?
Why do grownups hurt each other,
While little children only love?
Little child, yet forgiving,
Why do grownups hate their neighbours?
Why do grownups hurt each other,
While little children only love?
Honoured elder in your temple,
Why are grownups all so foolish?
Honoured elder in your wisdom,
Tell me what you know of life.
Honoured elder, long past violence,
Why do great men yet wage war?
Why do grownups hurt each other,
While their elders talk of peace?
Honoured elder, once corrupted,
Why do people lie and steal?
Why do grownups hurt each othe,
While their elders talk of peace?
Honoured elder, now forgiving,
Why do grownups hate their neighbours?
Why do grownups hurt each other,
While their elders talk of peace?
Child and elder, what are the answers;
Where may we find the reasons in life?
Child and elder, there was a great man
Born long ago in an ancient place.
Little child, He was a baby,
Born to bring peace to woman and man.
Honoured elde, He was a teacher,
Who brought to this world lessons of peace.
Child and elder, He was a grownup
Who loved His neighbours, and waged no war.
Little child, be that saviour:
Bring to this world a fresh, new peace.
Honoured elder, be that saviour:
Teach the peace to all the world.
Little child, leave the nursery;
Honoured elder, leave the temple.
Peace is not for child and elder;
Peace is for all who hear the words.
Child and elder, be that saviour
And teach the world peace, though they curse your name.
Little child in your nursery,
Help the grownups not be fools.
Honoured elder in your temple,
help the children spread God's peace.

For John Nutting, who taught me to know a gentle God and loving Christ in the midst of a world which believes in a vengeful God - who taught me to see joy in a tired and disspirited world.
For Father Mark in a later time - a new source of strength and faith in my life - a new model for my love of God.
