The rain and wind
In chilling blasts
Led them to
The mission site.
Ground teams search
And airplanes fly,
Seeking the trail
Of the missing planes.
The teams return
And are relieved;
New crews man
The mission base.
Static scrambles
Radio words
As they attempt
To help the search.
Then the call:
Survivors found!
The mission now
Is all for training.
Then she meets him
In the comm room,
And they speak
As if old friends.
The shadows lengthen,
The day is ending,
And he and she
Are now together.
Then the call comes:
They have found it -
The ground teams race
To the site of ruin.
But no one still
Is at the crash site
So the mission
Is recalled.
She and he
Cling to each other
Fearful lest
It comes to naught.
The teams return
To the base site
And debriefing
Now begins.
Then the Colonel
Thanks the soldiers
For their efforts
For the day.
He and she
Then are parted
As the squadrons
Leave for home.
The rain and wind
In chilling blasts
Led them to
The mission site.
The search succeeded
And all were rescued,
But he and she
Were forever parted.
For Charles Sprigg with love.
