Maturing Love

I met you on a hilltop
When I was just a girl
And you were such a soldier -
So proper and commanding.
I feared you on the hilltop,
And yet I was attracted
To the quiet little corner
Of your self you tried to hide.
I lost you for an autumn,
Then found you in the winter,
And we were then still strangers,
A soldier and a child.
You showed me no affection -
Not one bit of emotion -
Yet still I was attracted
To your quiet, secret self.
A whole year came between us,
And then you came back to me -
And I was then a soldier,
And you were a gentle man.
Four months have passed between us,
And still we are together,
And with the fifth month passing,
We now choose to wed.
A love that grew from fear
Has blossomed 'tween two soldiers -
Two very special people -
And now it shall be sealed.
For Andy.
