Woes of Basic Life

It's a corner of existence
That few men ever see.
It's a closely guarded secret
Which was revealed to lowly me.
It's controlled from powers higher
Than many men can reach.
It's a life of many trials
Which many lessons teach.
All alike within it
Behind its walls and rules,
A uniform existence
Which makes wise men out of fools.
All ordered and established
Behind its barricades,
Within the bounds around it
Strong minds and hearts are made.
Regardless of the sameness
Of this secret world we know,
Some inmates of this secret world
Find that they can no more go.
Some few poor souls among us
Just cannot take the strain
Of a life in guarded secret
With a number for a name.
