Mary Boyle was born in Scartaglin, County Kerry, Ireland. Her home was near the city of Tralee. The river Shannon is a little to the north of Tralee, and the lakes of Killarney are twelve miles south of her home town. She sailed to America at the age of 24 years, and was three months in the passage. THat was during the notorious potato famine. There were many mishaps during Mary's journey to America. The passengers suffered from ship's fever, and the Captain died and was buried at sea. The drinking water gave out, and the ship was lost for several days in a fog. Mary lost all her hair during her bout with the fever, but it grew back as lovely blonde curls. Mary landed in Boston, Mass., and travelled by rail to Ludlow, Vt.. The railroad stopped at Bellows Falls, Vt., so Mary had to complete her trip by stage coach.
