Clayton, Thames and Hudson, ISBN: 0500050740 Review by Katherine: This is another book on my shelf, it's a excellent and handy reference for all 170 Pharaohs (all 170 known so far that is). The royal names, cartouches, monuments, and tomb of each Pharaoh are laid out in chronological order. Actually, it stays more on the end of my desk than on the shelf. Genetics and Evolution  Almost Like a WhaleSteve Jones. Anchor Books; ISBN: 1862300259 Review by Duncan: An updated version of Charles Darwin's 'The Origin of Species'. Steve Jones uses evidence that has accumulated in support of the theory of evolution in the 150 yrs since the Darwin's theory was published. This book is both highly informative and very entertaining and can be recommended to anyone interested in biology and the scientific interpretation of the development of new species.  GenomeMatt Ridley. Fourth Estate; ISBN: 185702835X Review by Duncan: A superb introduction to human genetics. Explains clearly what genes do and what effects they have. Each chapter is devoted to a detailed discussion on a single gene from each of our 23 chromosomes. Matt Ridley shows how our genes determine our individuality, our susceptibility towards disease and even our sexuality and intelligence. Our genes also reveal the secrets of our hidden past and reveal how we have evolved as a species. Each chapter is written with considerable style and humour and this makes the book a pleasure to read. If this book is half as good as The Last Neanderthal I'm in for a treat!  The Last Neanderthal:The Rise, Success, and Mysterious Extinction of Our Closest Human Relatives Ian Tattersall, ISBN: 0813336759 Review by Katherine: Since I mentioned The Last Neanderthal I thought I'd put that one on the list as well. I just adore Neanderthals but I had no idea this book was going to be so enjoyable! Ian Tattersall has a gift for writing about complicated matters in an uncomplicated way.
