Meditation and Reflection on:

Learning To Listen

Bible Reading & Meditation

Luke 10:38-42

Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her than to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.

Reflection

Someone recently asked me to write a meditation on getting the clutter out of your head so you can listen to God. I prayed about this problem and the story of Martha and Mary entered my thoughts. I thought about Martha..so busy preparing her house for the visit of Jesus and her anger over her sister Mary who did not help her. While Mary sat silently at Jesus' feet and listened to him...listened to every word he said. So it is with us. How can we expect to hear what the Lord is telling us when we are so preoccupied with the world? Martha did not fully realize that Jesus was there for her. Mary did. She knew the cleaning, cooking and fussing did not matter. What did matter was that Jesus was present and she was going to be with Him and to listen to what he had to say to her. So, what happens to us when we go into prayer waiting to here what Jesus is saying to us? Are we too busy worrying and fussing about our life or do we sit and listen to the One who is in control.

Wait on the Lord...take deep breaths...inhaling the goodness of God and exhaling the pressure and stress of your day. Open your heart fully and allow the Lord Jesus Christ to enter. Talk with Him. Jesus, I am afraid that I am like Martha. My mind is cluttered with the world and I am so busy trying to handle everything by myself...with no help. I forget that You are here for me. Help me to be like Mary. Let me learn to sit quietly at your feet and to listen to what you are saying to me. Help me to realize that You and only You are the one who is in control of my life.

I write in my journal any thoughts or feelings I have experienced during this meditation and reflection.

Prayer Focus

Father in Heaven, thank you for always being there for me...even during times that I am not willing to give up myself. Father...help me to learn to be more like Martha's sister Mary. Let me learn to sit at your feet all of my days and listen to what you are saying to me. Help me to take away the world's distractions and help me to learn to focus on your goodness and strength. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, My Savior! Amen.
