Meditation and Reflection on:

Thirsting For God

Bible Reading & Meditation

Psalm 42:1-2

As the deer pants for streams of water;
so my soul pants for You.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.

Isaiah 26:9

My soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.

Luke 6:21

Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.

1 Peter 2:2

Like newborn babies, crave spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Reflection

Proverbs uses the image of a deer with swift feet and gracefulness as advice for young man who were about to get into trouble: "Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter"(Pr6:5). Isaiah described the great joy of the people who were healed of long afflicted sin and its consequences by the example of the jumping deer, "Then will the lame leap like a deer"(Is 35:6). Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when he healed the sick and the lame. Imagine the steps of the man who after 38 years of waiting was healed by Jesus and could now walk! But, how did this man and others feel before Christ's help came to them? The Psalmist gives us some clue with his writing, "As the deer pants for stream of water, so my soul thirsts for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God" (Ps42:1-2). We, too, are chased and harrassed by enemies, especially enemies of the soul, the greatest being the devil. It causes us to have soul thirst for God, for the living water of His word, for Jesus Christ, who lives and gives us the living water. Quench your thirst...drink from the living water!

Wait on the Lord...take deep breaths...inhaling the goodness of God and exhaling the pressure and stress of your day. Open your heart fully and allow the Lord Jesus Christ to enter. Talk with Him. Jesus, I am so thirsty for the living water. Only You can quench my thirst. I am like the deer that pants for the stream water. Let me drink my fill and let my heart overflow with the goodness of the Lord. Help me to fill my soul more and more with Your word, Your love and Your goodness. And when I have had my drink, my heart will leap, my spirit soar and my mouth will proclaim the goodness of the Lord!

    I write in my journal any thoughts or feelings I have experienced during this meditation and reflection.

Prayer Focus

Father in Heaven, thank you for the thirst in my soul for your living water. Thank you, Father, for the drink of Jesus that is the only water that will quench me. Help me to quench my soul thirst daily with the water of life--the Gospel. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, My Savior! Amen.
